Many still seem to doubt Tesla is going to produce the CT... well the 9,000 ton clamping force Idra Giga Press made specifically for the CT arrived in Houston last week and will be shipped/installed in the Austin plant s00n (sorry, every time I type soon it comes out s00n now for some reason ?). That thing cost Tesla a fortune and you don't spend that kind of $$$$$$$$$ if you're not planning on using it.

You are aware we are talking about a guy who accidentally committed himself to buying Twitter, right?

This is exactly why I don't think the Cybertruck will be very successful long term. Initially it will be a hit with a bunch of people buying purely for the wow and attention factor. Once a bunch are on the road and no one cares, then the owners are left with a giant expense truck. Sales will drop.

In order to maintain sales it needs to offer a compelling reason to buy this truck over the competition. I don't see it outside of the wow factor at the moment.
No argument there. If they want another hit like the 3 and the Y, it needs to provide meaningful value beyond the novelty of the styling. Until they show a production ready truck and tell us how much it will actually cost, who knows.

Tesla has a lot of advantages over Rivian, not the least of which are:

It's not the first EV Tesla has ever built.
They have a well built out network of Service Centers already in place.
Pretty much no chance of them going belly-up.
Huge lead in the user interface area.
Extensive vertical integration that somewhat helps insulate them from "supply chain issues".
Etc.. etc...

He's also the guy who can afford to accidentally buy twitter
Very true. Doesn't mean it was wise decision or a smart business move.

The CT is plain ugly to me. Add that on top of Tesla's crappy service and shoddy build quality and it's a complete stay away for me.

Now before I'm flamed for this consider:
  1. One Friend got a Model 3 at New Years 2020. He was out of town for the holiday and Tesla told him he MUST come back to town and take delivery of said car before midnight on 12/31 or he would lose his reservation. My friend rushed back to town, stood in line at the factory for hours, only to be told by Tesla the car wasn't ready and he could pick it up on 1/2.
  2. Take our Roadster that was just into Tesla for service. We had an appointment for a set date and time and when we checked it in, we were told we are Roadster number 6 in line and it'll be about 7-10 business days before they get to it. And no you you must leave the car here so we can get to it when we are ready (mind you we live 2 miles from that service location).
  3. Another friend has a Model 3 that's about 10 months old. While riding in the back seat, I can easily spot 4-5 areas where the moulding doesn't line up with he headliner, B-pillars, etc. Look at the outside of the car, and there's several panel gaps that are off, and there's a noticeable difference where the front hood isn't aligned from one side to the other.
To me, it's not worth the exercise in pain the CT would obviously be.

I said 35 off the cuff and it was 39,900. That's splitting hairs just a little bit don't you think?
I agree but if a 13% difference in price is immaterial, maybe the 7% of preorders for the base model isn't all that important either? I also agree that if it does cost over $100k like you suggest, I think it's safe to say they will lose almost all their preorders and sell in similar numbers to the Model X. In other words, a niche product more in line with an R1T Max Pack. I have a friend working on the CT and I don't get the sense that's what's going to happen at least regarding the price. The design philosophy seems much closer to the Model 3. Extremely simple all around to maximize cost savings. They're not even going to paint the darn things. Their ambition is to make 100's of thousands of these and there just won't be enough demand for six figure Cybertrucks to make that happen. On the luxury and amenities side, it doesn't look like the CT is going to compete with the Rivian, Lariat, or Denali. Much closer to the F150 Pro or XLT which is why I don't think it will be quite as expensive as many worry it will be. Either way, I'm not bullish we'll see many on the road next year. I doubt volume production will begin before 2024.

I would prefer if Elon admitted the design is horrific and made something that people actually wanted to own. I am sure the Tesla fanboys will be all over it but that is the laziest design I have seen in a long time. Just horrific.
Ya so many people don't want to own it that it has like 20 times the reservation quantity as all of Rivian.

Elon just sold perfume that smelled like dirt, his fans will buy anything. But I get it the product looks terrible.

Enjoy your vapourware then my dude. Personally I plan to enjoy my.... Polestar 2 while my Rivian seems to be perpetually at service at this point. Haven't seen it in over two weeks.

I need a truck for work. Have been holding off on another ICE truck for the past couple years hoping an EV work truck would come along. I've got reservations for R1T, Cybertruck, Silverado EV, and F-150 Lightning. At this point I'm not brand-particular, will take whichever I can get in my hands the fastest that meets my specific needs.

That said, the Rivian was always kind of underwhelming. High price, premium interior options that I have no need for, and most importantly the small bed size. Was already resigned to having to wait for Max Pack so I could tow a trailer. If I can get a Cybertruck in my hands sooner I'm canceling my Rivian order. And I say this as a stock holder for all four companies, LOL. Bigger bed and range for the win. Plus it would really look bad-a** among all the rust buckets in my blue collar, working class neighborhood. ?

I went camping with my son saturday night and had to set up a ground tent after dark. I was eyeing my rooftop tent yesterday and the rack on the Polestar.... I might just try to mount it up and see if it works. Polestar is rated for the weight, but it has the door jam clamping style carrier. Volvo's thing is it has recessed rivet holes that the clamps line up with though, so maybe it wouldn't end up on the freeway.
