I test drove a Model Y with FSD this morning. (Highly recommend if you haven’t tested it already. It’s insanely good.)

First impressions after getting into a Model Y again after a while driving the R1S: The Model Y feels like a toy compared to the Rivian, the software is clunky and confusing, but the self driving capabilities are amazing.

Will Rivian ever get Full Self Driving?! I realllly hope so.

What we know so far is next generation of sensors will have more capability but we don't yet know what that look like. I wouldn't count on it from current gen vehicles getting all of those features.

Probably at some point, likely via licensing. Doubt the current R1’s will be capable of offering such though.

Agree the latest FSD is impressive.

At R2 live reveal and webcast, RJ has already said next gen hardware will be able to support fully hands-free driving. That would mean current hardware isn't capable. As for Rivian licensing someone else's software to do it, unless announced, pure nonsense and there's been zero hint of Rivian not working on a version of their own.

Actual quote regarding licensing of Tesla's FSD has "major manufacturer". Musk, who belittled Rivian and predicted bankruptcy "in 6 months", would not put Rivian and "major" in the same thought. Major, by production volume, is BYD, Geely (which includes Volvo/Polestar), Toyota, Hyundai/KIA, MB, BMW, VW, GM, Ford and Stellantis. The fanboys, seeing what they want to see, started posting all over the internet suggesting Rivian is that "major" manufacturer.

I own both. The Model Y was mine for a little over a year before getting the R1S. My wife owns the MYP now. I don’t trust FSD to be honest, too many nightmare stories that most folks never hear about. Tesla has been working to improve it for years. It’s just not worth it, although the cost has significantly decreased with a $100 per month subscription for current owners I believe. Tesla just enabled FSD for all owners with an OTA update for a free one month trial in an effort to increase adaption and make $$$.

I totally agree with the toy like feel of the MY compared to the Rivian. The MY has a plastic, stiff and hollow feel compared to the R1S’s more luxurious feel. As far as Tesla’s software being clunky and confusing, I would disagree here. I think its great. If you haven’t used it before it could be overwhelming because it is feature packed, perhaps too many features for some. But, I do like Rivian’s software presentation. Its simple layout makes it easier to learn but could benefit from a lot of features Tesla has.

Rivian said the R1 platform was capable of hands-free driving as well but it never happened. Maybe they will hit this new goalpost.

Rivian doesn’t have the money to develop it on their own. Maybe they will license it. If they do neither, they are probably wasting money on all of those cameras, sensors, and compute.

The new FSD is very good. It has been doing 99% of my driving the last few weeks. It’s a little slow sometimes, and I don’t always like its lane selections, but it is highly competent. Anybody who expects to be old someday should be cheering for this.

I don't really want my car to drive for me, but I would like my car to prevent me, as a driver, from doing something dangerous. Like turning the wrong way into a one-way street or running into a pedestrian, cyclist, or another car.

I own R1S, R1T and model X. Rivian with FSD and Tesla software will be great. Alexa sucks . FSD is a game changer, and it is getting better every week by OTA updates. It’s an amazing option to have. I would never buy a vehicle that doesn’t give me an autonomous driving option. When u pay near 100k, consumers would expect many options including FSD which I believe will be adopted by many automakers. I am subscribing $99 as soon as the free trial expires. By talking to friends who tried it, I think adoption rate will be around 20-30 %, and continue to rise as the system keeps on improving.

Going to be hard for other companies to compete if they don’t have/adopt/develop/license FSD..
