Why can't we lower the vehicle when in park?

Might also be a safety thing - the vehicle is gonna be in park when being serviced, and if it lowers while someone is under it and it's not on a lift....

There's a popup to confirm that it's safe to lower...

Did software change? Pretty sure I’ve lowered in the past while parked, only to have passengers panic when they heard suspension and brakes squeak and groan in protest. There was also on-screen warning and prompt for confirmation that there are no obstructions under the truck.

I think it won't kneel in park because it will stress your suspension. If I raise or lower the ride height of our G2 R1S when parked in the garage I get an unpleasant sounding pop when I put it in reverse. Best to change ride height or kneel when moving IMHO.

I'm pretty tall. The only times I ever lower my vehicle are when I'm loading something heavy into the bed, or occasionally climbing in for something, myself. So why doesn't the "manual lowering" work when the vehicle is in park? Seems pretty dumb if I'm loading something in to have to get into the vehicle, close the door, put it in drive, then lower the vehicle, put it back in park and get back out. Would be nice if I could just reach in and hit the "lower" button. Or at least not have to put it in Drive.

Is there some safety reason why this is?

Sorry if this is a dumb question or I missed the obvious answer. 😆

Well for what it is worth, I tried my 2025 R1S this morning when I needed to unload a heavy tool box from the rear. So with the rear hatch open (both the hatch door open and tailgate down) and with the vehicle in "P" the "Kneel" option was active. I was able to put the vehicle in kneel mode. I am in the habit of turning my screens off when I'm park for the night. So I needed to depress the brake pedal to turn the screens back on. I may have kept my foot on the brake when I selected the kneel command, honestly, I don't remember. I do know it was definitely in "P". Next time I will try it like you, reaching in the window. I'll update this post if it produces a different result.

One thing to note, I am still on 2026.07.0. I have not downloaded the new release 2026.15.0 whether this is pertinent or not 🤷‍♂️

The noises are caused by tension in the suspension, drivetrain and brakes. Suspension geometry changes as you change height, and these changes cause wheels to want to rotate. If you were to change heights while in neutral, and stationary, you would observe them to rotate slightly. But, since parking brakes are engaged and applying pressure on the brake rotors, they are not free to turn. Plus, all suspension components have 8k lbs of mass and friction of tires to overcome. And since the wheels/tires splay outward as suspension lowers (negative camber), you're essentially shoving each tire against the ground, with 25% of total curb weight on top of each. All of these forces would also preload the drive shafts and reduction gears in the drive unit.

It probably doesn't do any harm, because each component is likely spec'ed to withstand such forces and more. But it's also a lot of force/tension and manufacturing defects do occur. If you don't want any of this to happen, change heights while rolling.

Joining the "Gen 1, I can use the Kneel button when in Park" brigade.

Didn't even step on the brake pedal to "turn on" the truck.

Not sure everyone is talking out the same thing (OP kneel mode vs changing ride hights), but did you try clicking the greyed out button?
Yes, like 50 times, LOL. It's not a "clickable thing" when grayed out. See video:

I know the other one people are mentioning. Like, if the vehicle is on a slope and you hit the "drop tailgate" button, it gives you a warning about "You're on a slope, objects may roll out". But this is giving nothing.

I haven't tried going into the other menu and going through all the "adjust ride height" stuff, just the quick Kneel button specifically. 🤷

I do software things
Gen1 R1S on 2026.07.0

I have always been able to kneel on park. So maybe indeed a software version thing unless someone reports otherwise.

I did both peek through open window and from driver seat

My kneel option doesn't show up (greyed out) on the camera screen, but will on the other screens. Might be that simple. Gen 2.

Not sure everyone is talking out the same thing (OP kneel mode vs changing ride hights), but did you try clicking the greyed out button?

From the release notes:

Enhanced Kneel Mode
Getting in and out of your vehicle just got a whole lot smoother. We've redesigned Kneel Mode to be more responsive, more accessible, and available exactly when you need it.

  • ...
  • You can now trigger Kneel Mode on demand via a new Quick Control option to activate the lowering process while traveling at low speeds, less than 20 mph (32 km/h).
  • If Kneel Mode isn't available due to specific conditions, we'll let you know why. If the Kneel icon is greyed out in your Quick Controls, simply choose it to learn more about why Kneel is unavailable.
