Rivian's Nearly 115K Vehicles Under Probe Over Rear Toe Link Issue

https://autos.yahoo.com/safety-and-...ans-nearly-115k-vehicles-under-144600625.html

May 28, 2026

Rivian Automotive, Inc. RIVN is under a preliminary investigation by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for 114,922 R1S and R1T vehicles over a potential issue involving the rear toe link. The probe covers 2022-2025 model years and follows two Vehicle Owner Questionnaires reporting left rear toe link separation in certain 2023-2024 R1S SUVs.

Per the complaints, the component separated while the vehicles were being driven, causing them to swerve across multiple lanes. One of the incidents led to a crash involving another vehicle and a roadside barrier. In both cases, investigators found that the bolt securing the toe link had fractured.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation gathered repair records, onboard video footage, images of the damaged parts and a police accident report tied to the complaints. There have been no injuries or fatalities linked to the issue so far.

The two vehicles involved had different service histories. One had undergone prior servicing, while the other had previously been in a collision. Despite those differences, both vehicles reportedly operated for months and accumulated thousands of miles without visible issues before the failures occurred.

The toe link is part of the suspension system responsible for maintaining rear-wheel alignment, and its failure could lead to a sudden loss of steering control. Per Reuters, the investigation will examine how sensitive the rear toe link joint is to expected road and service conditions, while also reviewing Rivian’s current repair procedures for the component.

The development follows an earlier action in January, when Rivian recalled 19,641 previously serviced R1S and R1T EVs in the United States over improperly assembled rear toe links.

Nasty accident few days ago, we were driving in Rally mode on an unpaved road.

I had used the Rally mode before and I understood the risks (reduced traction, disabled front collision detection, increased steering sensitivity etc.) and I knew how it felt like to drive. This time I lost complete control of the vehicle (VIN 3xxx, 2022 R1T LE, 20" Pirelli), it swerved left, right, eventually got dragged and hit trees on the side, huge impact, all airbags were out, driver side door got jammed and passenger side was blocked by a tree, some passerby opened the rear driver side door for us, we could finally escape. R1T had unlocked itself, SOS call worked, police, fire, ambulance arrived within few mins, all good. There was too much air bag dust inside, at that moment, it felt like the vehicle was on fire, panic mode. No injuries, not even a scratch, just micro glass on the skin. Fortunately, there was no other vehicle or life on the road when it happened.

Truck had new tires, 30k miles service with comprehensive check, along with the toe link recall all addressed in late February. In the last 4 years, we had attended to all the recalls, and we also had few other issues, one major: front passenger side air suspensions failed once, dropped to floor at one edge, overheat warning, while the vehicle was in motion. They had it in service for almost a month, they changed damper, compressor, lines, jounce, pretty much new suspension system.

I am not sure and I cannot prove it now if my accident had anything to do with toe link. Rivian uses complex electro-hydraulic roll control system and there are lot of variables. I am skeptical about using Rally mode ever again, even on the Gen-2, it is too risky.

I have doubts, is the toe link alone problematic or the overall suspension system?

I’ve never owned a vehicle that hasn’t had several recalls. Currently have two on our 2020 Highlander that need to be taken care of.

This includes 2025 model year.

Was toe link or any other suspension part broken after accident? Do you have pictures?

No, it was a total mess, whatever pictures we took later were meant for the insurance, we could not take any close up shots. It is my speculation, the overall suspension failed, I could be wrong. It is hard to analyze, the way I lost control of the vehicle, it started swerving severely just moments before the crash, all I could remember, I held the steering wheel firm and put pressure on the breaks, dragged along and it stopped only after it hit the trees head on. Front driver side wheel was on the ground, detached, could be due to impact mostly, I doubt it came loose and cause it, we will never know. Tree was uprooted, actually fell once they pulled the truck out, it is heavy vehicle, way too heavy, huge impact. We were unharmed, no scratches, no pain, the vehicle is built like a tank, and fortunately there were no other vehicles or lives around.

I hope they have addressed all mechanical, especially the suspension issues in the current generation R1s.

Glad that you are all ok, it's the most important thing. If suspension did fail and it was the same failure, Rivian has some liability here.
