Rivian vs Scout (⚠️ ADMIN WARNING: NO POLITICS)

Anecdotal evidence, but I have multiple friends who have been extremely gun-shy about EVs who LOVE the Scout and are only willing to give it a shot because of the extended range. It feels like a natural bridge for those who are hesitant to try new auto tech or suffer from range anxiety.

I never wanted to go on a long distance trip in my Rivian because it would brick or have major issues randomly. Maybe only once or twice per year but that's enough to ruin a long nice trip. Once on a day trip the rear window wouldn't go back up and it rained the whole trip back. That window issue required two mobile visits and one in shop. Lots of crap like that over the 3.5 years of ownership. My Ram 1500 was never in the shop for the 7 years I owned it, which I traded for the Rivian. My Volvo EX90 is in the shop monthly.

So I'm hoping for something a bit more trustworthy honestly.

The 2k lbs towing statement was for the EREV version - the generator being placed in front of the rear axle (at least at this point in development) caused a massive reduction in towing capacity. Supposedly they've solved it (according to the CEO), but there's been no info since then.

Three R2 isn't the Scouts direct competitor, the R1 is. The maxed out Scout with generator will be probably north of $90k like the top end R1s.

Towing with the Rivian or really any EV isn’t much of a joy either. The 2000lbs figure is outdated and we don’t have any hard figures on it as of yet.

The Ram Rev looks like a really amazing truck, coming out later this year. Like the Scout (they have both a sole EV and EV plus gas generator), and Ford has sucked since the Great Recession. The stock price has been stuck between $12-14 for like 20 years because they suck so much.

RAM killed the BEV version of the REV years ago. They are only producing the RAM 1500 EREV version and that has already been delayed years as well.

The truck was originally scheduled to release in 2024, and here we are in the second half of 2026 and not a single automotive journalist has ever driven a prototype of this new powertrain.

Does anyone really think the 1500 REV is releasing this year? Or is it more likely that the new powertrain is flawed, which is why RAM won’t let anyone drive one?

I loved the REV concept, I was sold on the B pillar delete with wide opening saloon style doors and the highly configurable track seating. I think it was less than a month after reserving my RAM, photos of the actual production Ram EV pickup leaked and it was just another Ram 1500 with updated headlights and tail lights. So disappointing. It was the fastest I'd ever purchased and then cancelled an EV reservation.

I was extremely excited about Scout when first announced as the battery electric version on paper is my ideal vehicle. Then came the delays and the (potentially indefinite) de-prioritization of the BEV in favor of the EREV. So I cancelled my day 1 reservation.

Let me be honest here, and disagree with you. I traded a Ram 1500 Hemi in for my Rivian when it first launched. I owned my Ram for 7 years and it was never in the shop. Not once, except for oil changes. The Rivian had so many problems including full bricking, and the service got terrible over time as the grew. I sold it for that reason.

I'd love a Ram EV with a gas generator with real buttons and old truck style over just an iPad now that I'm on my third EV with just an iPad (owned the first Model S when it came out and now a Volvo ex90 (I'll be selling this one after only 6 months of ownership).

So I realize everyone on here seems to be true Rivian enthusiasts but there are other views.

I think waiting until 2028 is exactly what RAM will do. Short-term, it’s probably the right financial decision. But what will the long-term RAMifications be if they sit out of the EV game for this long? I’m truly not sure considering the current state of EVs — especially EV trucks — in America.

I am a Rivian enthusiast, but I don’t own one. I think they are RAD, and I love renting and driving them; but the truck is simply too small for my family and everyday needs.

I wanted the BEV RAM truck to succeed. I also had a reservation for the BEV version before it was cancelled.

Same with Scout. I still have a reservation for the BEV Terra, but I think odds are unlikely it ever comes to market.

Ford cancelling the next-gen T3 BEV Lightning was another blow, and GM delaying their next-gen EV trucks is really unfortunate too.

I drive a GMC Sierra Denali EV and hoped that a full-size EV truck with more advanced software and better tech would release by the time my lease is up in October ‘27, but there’s 0% chance of that now.

The future EV truck market looked so bright just a couple years ago…

The Terra is significantly larger than the R1. 12 inches longer, 5 inches taller, much longer bed. It looked like the gas engine thing was going to be the only option, so I cancelled my reservation. I already have enough trouble driving and parking the R1 in the city, garages.

Same, but in all reality, by the time they get around to making the EREV, battery tech could eclipse the need for EREV for the majority and sadly that could be the reason it all falls over. I dont envy them or any EV manufacturer at the moment.

I think your Rivian had build quality issues. That was/is unfortunately common. All it takes is for one connector with intermittent signal to cause chaos. Those that are built well really don't have issues like you mentioned.

The Scout will still be heavily software defined. But it will be on the Rivian -VW joint venture tech.
