R2 Pet Mode Concerns From Owner's Test

I talked to service and they are trying to get me in tomorrow to check it out. I recall some R1s (can’t remember whether gen 1 or 2) had hvac with lower charge of refrigerant than at spec so maybe that is related. A few other details. 1) the AC compressor sound was barely audible either inside or outside the vehicle (pet mode or standard hvac mode). 2) the hvac had wasn’t able to reach the temp set point 72 but varied between 77 and 75 degrees on the 25 min drive home despite maxing the fan speed, turning off auto mode, and turning off fresh cabin air. The car was blowing cool but not really cold even when we lowered the set temp to 68 degrees.

Sounds similar to my car, I’m in for Wednesday service as well.

If the car AC works great except in pet mode, that's not a hardware problem; that's a software issue. @R1Thrilled said his AC was fine.

I initially thought it was just petmode but on the way home found that the cabin temp showed in the app was at least 5 degrees higher than the setpoint. Now maybe the app cabin temp is incorrect but the rivian app cabin temp was the same temp as showed on screen in petmode.

If you turn your set temp to LO does it cool the cabin and blow cold? I feel like mine is super cold so it feels like less an HVAC system issue and more temp sensor or software based. Like the set temps don’t produce the desired result. Will be curious to hear what service finds.

The R2 will be my first EV.

To me I am not concerned if it's a software issue that gets corrected in a timely manner. The R2 wasn't released with the pet mode but added later. It would be nice if it went through a more rigorous test and was released flawless, but as long as it's a fixable software problem I'll keep my reservations.

I would view it an issue if it's a hardware issue. If that is the case I would pause my reservation and either wait longer to take delivery so they can adjust their manufacturing or I would move to another vehicle and wait for the R3 as I originally planned.

Pet mode isn't new to EV's and Rivian should understand how pet owners view it.

well... for at least the last 50+ years common car buying advice has always been to avoid the first model year of any new car because they are more likely to have gremlins. new model problems impact all manufacturers, just ask Toyota about introducing a new engine.

As a former Toyota dealer technician, it is still too soon for me to talk about this!

For sure, buying the very first cars off the line can come with some teething issues, but this is part of being an early adopter of anything, really.

My only complaint about the R1 is the lack of overhead second row vents. I have a dog hammock in there, which blocks the vents,

I bought a hammock that has a mesh section in the middle right there to allow the air to flow through. Could look for one of those that you like?

Way ahead of you - I bought one (from Skechers) that I installed last night. It's really nice.
