We have to be realistic of what people will drive in. We could turn the HVAC off and maybe get a few more miles out of it but no one is doing that in 98+ degree weather.
Wasn't the entire point of the test to compare to EPA test? Pretty sure they don't test in nearly 100 degree weather.

What surprises me most other than the obvious, is that the R2 isn’t measurably better than the R1s?

It’s like 3% better, but has 20+% less weight, and should somehow be more efficient due to motor usage and 3-4 years of engineering optimzaiton. And a bit to cD. Odd.

The point of the test was to see how far R2 could go from 100% to 0% at 70 mph (constant). The EPA does the testing in a lab, we did it in the real world where there are a trillion variables that play into it.

Sure, that's why Tom over at SOC got 259 miles on A/T's and he didn't even run it until it died.

“The tire pressure also wasn’t optimal—the entire test is invalid!!”
We set the tire pressures to manufacturer recommended 42 PSI

About what I expected out of R2.

The R1S numbers above are from a different test, so not directly comparable. R2 would do better than this head to head.

Elevation, temperature, HVAC, tire PSI, etc... so many variables which is why I stated that in my article. You could run this test all over again in 10 degree lower temp and get a different result. The question is how do we get closer to the EPA range because it's so off.

Something is just way off. There's no way Rivian would overlook real world testing exposing the EPA numbers.

Right but the headline is how much lower the R2 is compared to EPA when another test could be much closer. But everyone picks up on this test because you all are YouTubers.

Why do you believe Rivian would not be deceptive? Most consumers will not educate themselves and trust advertised EPA values.

@ksurfier posted this in the R2 efficiency thread and while not the R2, it IS indicative of how much ambient temp does affect efficiency.

I’ve noted this myself and from 5+ years of tracked data with my TM3LR, 65 degrees is the MOST efficient and >90 it can get very INEFFICIENT.. I don‘t think it’s JUST HVAC though, I think it’s mostly BMS temp management.

R2 to Y is of course going to be valid, but R2 compared to R2 in different temps and test should yield a different results, POSSIBLY more than 10% difference.
