Here's the latest from Jose and @RivianTrackr

From the article:

Conserve is doing something different on R2

I was given the details about this by Rivian. Conserve adjusts the torque and power limits, which causes the car to slow down and results in a more relaxed drive with a lower 0 to 60 time. In addition to altering these limits, Rivian modifies the way torque is delivered, reducing the rate at which torque reaches the parts downstream of what your foot is requesting. The third change takes place even further upstream in the accelerator pedal map, which determines the torque request that is sent to the drive units initially.

There is no reference at all in that regard to dropping an axle. With the R1 model, Conserve switches to front-wheel drive, and it is this feature that owners most frequently mention when discussing Conserve. The R2’s approach, on the other hand, is based completely on torque management.

I feel like Conserve Mode in R2 is really useless right now.

It says that "launch mode" raises top speed. If sport mode is 130 mph, what is the top speed in launch mode?

I'm surprised it is not RWD-only vs All-Purpose AWD, but I guess that would leave the same question of what it means on the Standard RWD. Maybe they are focusing on optimizing with response curves so the Standard RWD has a somewhat meaningful story?

And even with just the adjustments to the responsiveness, I imagine it will still help the lead-foots out there. It might come down to something like the "automatic cars are better at shifting than manuals -- unless you are a really good driver" debate. Conserve may not do anything for experienced EV drivers who naturally modulate the car's power appropriately, but for novices or people who just don't care, it might help a little.

I'm interested to see if/how they tweak Conserve mode in the future.

The conserve mode sounds like the Tesla's Chill mode.

Also, several early reviews indicated that the conserve puts the vehicle into the RWD mode. I thought that was a great change from R1. It would be great to have the full power RWD mode, and be able to drive like a high powered RWD.

My understanding is that hard acceleration matters a lot less to EV efficiency than for ICE. Top speed obviously matters a lot still but I don't think aggressive acceleration does.

Oh it matters and its quite noticeable. Even if i never touch the brakes, hard acceleration definitely kills range too. a lot of energy is lost in terms of heat...hard acceleration really heats up the motor and battery.

Which drive modes have front axle disconnect during cruise? And does the front axle reconnect to provide more regen when you lift off the accelerator?

Ok, if you're like the R1T I saw today doing burnouts at local stoplights...
