It's probably from the factory and I would live with it. Fixing it would require taking material off and that is not for the fait of heart and can lead to going through the clear coat. Get a good ceramic coating it will help fill the valleys and your paint will be all the better for it.

I guess it is acceptable from the factory. To me in this photo posted shows the same thing I see on my truck when reflections hit the surface.

Think of it as a feature rather than a flaw. Your R1T may have a better range because of the orange peel. A normal dimpled golf ball has half the drag of a smooth one.

I agree with the OP and my LE LG doesn't quite have the same level of orange peel, but it has too much for an $80K vehicle. I put my request in to have this addressed six weeks ago and I have an appointment to adjust charge door and gear tunnel panel gaps (all others are excellent), as well as address the orange peel.

My paint guy tested the clear coat and said while it's thick enough to color sand now, in 4-5 years it may wear through because of color sanding now. So, we'll have to paint correct with compound instead and live with it.

Thanks. I am glad some one else has seen this too. Thats what I'm worried about too if they take it and don't do a re spray. And I doubt they will do a re spray and there are risks with a respray as i have seen in this forum. I will probably end up doing something similar. Just want someone with more experience to see my truck.

Go look at any brand new bmw, Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, etc. and you’ll find orange peel like this.

Did Rivian change the paint equipment or is this from the legacy Mitsubishi setup?

Agree. I chuckle a bit at the comments "too much for an $80k car." The car is $80k because of what is under/inside/behind the paint. It's still a factory paint job from a startup factory that has painted ~5,000 vehicles, not a $10k custom hand sprayed paint job.

While orange peel is "normal", based on the Rivians I've seen around my area (Irvine, where one of their main offices are), they do have more than what I consider normal.

Unfortunately I don't know what Rivian will do for you, as I don't think they will bear the cost of a paint correction.

I've owned a wide range of vehicles in my life, from basic economy cars to higher end cars and Rivian appears to have one of the worst. My $20K Honda Fit looked better honestly.

I'm hoping the later iterations improve, but I'm not counting on it. If my R1S gets delivered looking not-to-my-liking, I'll probably just pay for a paint correction.

All new whizbang latest and greatest waterborne robotized system optimized to apply the least paint possible(which is part of what causes the orange peel effect)

I have had my truck 3 days now (which i love), and it's becoming clearer and clearer that my Limestone truck is covered in orange peel texture in the paint work. It is extremely difficult to picture with my phone and I can see it everywhere on the truck in the right lighting conditions amd angles in my garage and bright light. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what the outcome was. I submitted a service request last night and will call my guide today to escalate as it's approaching he my 7 day window. I added my screen shot of the service request...look at the texture around the reflection of the light. It was the best I could do.

Normal, unless McLaren's and G Wagons and S classes are not an exception because I've seen literally every car have orange peel. The only caviat is if there is enough clear coat people can pay to have it smoothed out and still have plenty of clear coat leftover.

Orange peel is part of any production car process, this is absolutely true. But, not at this level. Our RX450H has no where near the amount as the Rivians. It's a combination of the tooling and post paint prep.

The C8 Vette has quite a bit less and they purposely applied a thicker clear coat so those who are concerned can color sand more effectively.

Ultimately it's a truck, but it's too much for a premium adventure vehicle, at least to me.

Is the orange peel on the hood also, or is limited to a side or area? I'm asking because orange peel is a result of over application of the material, paint or clear coat. It is very rare to have it from the factory however it it possible. My father was an expert in this field, he worked at 3M developing abrasives and worked with the automotive field. He taught me that orange peel in a new vehicle limited to a smaller area was a indicator of paint work after production, this happens usually in transport damage, something Rivian has had issues with. That is why I asked what your vin is.
Your father "was" an expert but paint technology has since changed and this information is, sadly, no longer the case.
