Thanks!

Yeah was told it didn't look like a tear, but rather a leak and that maybe they could repack it and place new clips.
A tiny leak looks bad because it cakes up with dirt, but it can be a miniscule loss, especially with a grease like CV grease. I would wipe it clean, and drive it, and keep an eye on it to see how much is slinging out each day.

Stupid question @Rasputin @Dark-Fx and Op, why not just pull a clip and shove it full of grease for now?? Just have a jubilee clip ready in case that one fails?➰

I may be adding a mixed bag of jubilee clips and grease to my self-service bag under the back seat now...

It would be good for Rivian to be able to notify their supplier about the axle, but they should be able to do that with traceability information they already have from building the truck. No idea if the assembly equipment for the clips keeps track of the amount of pressure put on the clip during the installation.

Wouldn't having some shop other than Rivian do something void your warranty with Rivian? I can't imagine Rivian being too fired up about that plan. You probably just need to scream louder.
No, at least in the USA, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prohibits a manufacturer from voiding a warranty on the basis of aftermarket parts/service. A manufacturer can only “require” genuine parts/service if they are provided free-of-charge to the customer. If the customer is expected to pay, then they have a right to shop around.

They are not going to repack the cv boot, they’re going to replace the entire halfshaft :).

The supplier already knows. From my understanding this isn’t unheard with this specific part from this specific supplier and it’s across a variety of vehicle makes and models.

That's what I'd expect from a "new" vehicle with low mileage. Labor to swap parts is less than repairing, in many cases, and they may want to analyze the failure.

in dealership land this is usually required, be wise it decides how much the company will pay the dealer for the warranty repair.

A potential "limp mode" for this situation would be to drive the truck in the conserve mode until the repair can be completed. This would disengage the RWD and ensure that the joint is not being put under any drive load to cause added stress/wear in a low, or no grease condition.

Wow!

Seriously!

I'm not a mechanic, but that seems extreme right?

Not really. There's a level of risk (for Rivian) associated with re-packing and fixing the boot. If grease has been leaking out, there's no telling what may have also made its way in (water, debris) that increases the risk of premature failure of the repair. With a warranty replacement, they can likely pass at least some of the cost back to the supplier. A simple R&R is really a no-brainer in this scenario.

I wouldn't drive it too much, considering the vehicle weight and high torque at each corner. Everything is sent through what should be a sealed bearing underneath that dust boot. Grease acts as the lubricant and coolant. Given the supply side woes I would really be careful. Definitely not 350 miles in a day. If its clicking or making any other sounds when you are driving/turning/applying torque I wouldn't drive it all. If you grab that half shaft and can twist it even a little, or move it in any way I wouldn't drive. Such a critical component. Like the ankle of your vehicle...
You're scaring me. I have to drive 350 miles in conserve mode (Dallas to Austin) pretty much in one go and both front axles click.

I have submitted to Rivian but they haven't told me not to drive it.

Thanks for the video/audio. Sounds like a CV joint. I would do whatever the dealer says... They are the ones with the warranty :), not anyone here. I've seen some questionable advice already. Leave it to the OEM. Be patient. They are new at this but I am sure they will make it right. It's an awesome product! Wish I had your problem! Someday... Good luck.

What's your approximate VIN# ? Wondering if this is affecting all or just some trucks? If it was widespread it would have probably been seen in the employee trucks that were delivered earlier in the year and hopefully be a known issue.

I was told it wasn't an urgent repair and that it was highly unlikely that there would be any consequences from normal use. It took them about 10 days to get in touch with me to arrange repairs. If it was a safety risk, service indicated that they would elevate it and get it resolved faster.
