Glad you’re having fun.

Posters here aren’t mentioning it much, but a significant part of CarPlay is seamless Siri integration and integrated audio prompts. Siri offers secure access to contacts stored on your phone where they are housed securely away from Rivian and Amazon.

One clever example of audio integration with CarPlay is when giving driving directions it can send haptic pulses to your watch and play audio prompts that indicate left or right turns on your watch. And these are generally less invasive than lowering the volume to make the turn by turn audio okay through the main sound system.

Yes, you have to plug your phone in on most cars. On the Rivian, this would have the added benefit of “fixing” the wireless charging pad. LOL

These are all preferences of course, but using CarPlay does not necessarily mean “eyes and fingers on the screen”.

But some kind of phone text integration is objectively safer than what we have now.

The fun part about it is a lot of the same people complaining about the lack of carplay are also complaining about having to use the display to do things while driving.

"Glaring miss"? I don't think there really are any.

OTA updates will rectify many things people are classing as a miss here...kneel mode, cabin heat protection etc

Glove box....mmm ok but most people open their glove box literally once a year to put in a fresh insurance card.

The center console should have a top tray or something better to utilize the depth. Aftermarkets will come up with something.

Sounds a lot like vapor ware to me. You have a deposit on a pair yet? What automakers have said they are going to use Apple self driving software?
Yeah it was a snarky post, sorry about that.

Apple’s been working on VR/AR for ever in tech years. An expensive developer edition will be announced in 1H23 followed by consumer versions in 2024 and 2025. It is already developed and many Apple hardware and software products have been built around it. Apple Car is being built around the glasses.

CarPlay is already morphing into a dashboard takeover and that will continue. None of this is vaporware in the classic sense except perhaps the car which has a lot of challenges left to be solved. But it is central in Apple’s timeline so it is inevitable in that sense.

To be fair, if Apple solves self-driving (maybe no one can? Tesla has one of the world’s fastest supercomputers working on millions of hours of driver data and still can’t figure it out), the world of automakers will beat a path to their door, including perhaps Rivian at that point.

Rivian’s near term play is to keep Amazon happy and to spend a good 2-3 years trying to build out their in-car software on their own. Allow apps on their terms, self driving on their terms, services on their terms, maybe even VR/AR on their terms with Amazon hardware. Why sell out while the company is still being built? Give it a go and see if you can compete. If so, all the better.

If not, Apple will always be there, ready to incorporate you into the Borg.

I won't beat the dead horse that is CarPlay/AA debate, so i'll leave that be. I'll just say that in 2022, I do have a certain expectation for me to be able to use my phone via the vehicle infotainment for convenience and safety reasons. If I can't do basic things like have my text messages read and reply to said text messages via voice, and be able to use basic music elements like SiriusXM all without needing to touch my phone then there's an issue. Can CarPlay solve that? Sure, but so can not having CarPlay so that isn't the only solution.

My issue so far has been Rivian keeps touting that they won't have CarPlay because they can do it better, which which fine, but don't keep saying that while no improvements to it has been made. We're 6ish months in after real customer deliveries have started and we haven't seen any real improvements on that front, nor have they said anything about it other than generic "improvements are coming" or "more to come soon". Even this latest round of updates that are coming this week haven't shown any notes of improvements from either adding new apps to the truck, or adding more convenience things with items like text messaging. The "we can do it better" statement is getting old real quick when they keep saying it, but I keep having to use my phone while driving every single day.

Development takes time, I get it and live in that world. But insights into what's actually on the road map with ETA's would be very helpful. AFAIK Wassym on reddit hasn't said anything on the text messaging front unless I missed it.

#1 Shipping a new product with a widely known failed component (auto tonneau cover). They should have subbed it with the manual option as soon as they knew. The EE's who beta tested had to have many failures. This part gives me anxiety.
#2 Multiple reports of very fragile glass. I would not expect to have to worry about this with this level of vehicle (have never worried about glass on a previous car...)
#3 The Carplay/AA argument going on in these forums, which has been argued ad nauseam and I agree with.

I agree with the running boards. I have a Dodge 2500 w/running boards. I'd have put them on if they were not on the truck when I got it. Also have rear cover (8' bed) that I love. Glass roof delete would lower the head space due to the headliner & roof support structure, I'd prefer no glass either (it get over 100° here all summer). I want to mount a radio antenna & cannot do it in glass---no ground plane (& can't drill hole in safety glass). I want satellite radio--there is a lot of places out of cell coverage areas out west. All of that said---I still look forward to using my new (2 weeks old) truck for new adventures to quiet places.

Newer vehicles are getting wireless AA. I used it in a rental and it was much nicer than requiring a plug in. Not all vehicles have the capability though.
Right. I have a '21 F-150 Hybrid that was delivered with wired (plug in USB-C) CarPlay and Android Auto. An OTA update brought wireless CP/AA … it's better in some ways, but also can be a distraction when driving if the phone and car decide to start asking the driver to decide to connect the phone to the car for whatever reason.
Some newer vehicles allow all occupants of the vehicle to connect their phone to the car (so there's no "hey, do you want to connect to this phone?" while you're driving) which is mostly just a gimmick (there's some advantage over just setting one "primary" bluetooth connection … it's useful to be able to have a passenger figure out the nav on their phone then connect to the car to hand over the nav decision info to the vehicle nav … but imagine a car full of young people sharing the car as a bluetooth speak and playing their music from their phone … that's the only advantage at the same as being an obvious safety risk.)

For me, it's a power running board. I feel like this should have been an extremely high priority on a luxury, ultimate off-roader. In terms of practicality it boggles my mind how they could be futsing about with camp kitchens and whatnot while there's still like a 12" clearence at the lowest ride height from the door sill.

It's also a cool "techy" feature that already exists and is kind of the best way to do a running board. I feel like Rivian could have easily built something into the molding even to maintain aerodynamics.

I'd want this 10x more than a powered cover over a manual one, for instance.

Completely unforgivable to have a car of this quality, this capable, this expensive and not have this thought through better.
I agree it's technical evolutionary truck electric sliders that mold into the lower body of the truck. Essentially turns into a slider. Entertainment processor faster especially for navigation on the fly. Otherwise, get them out to the customers.

I'm about 5'9 and I do wonder how shorter people get into this truck gracefully. I always leave my suspension on Standard 'Auto" and I've perfected the hop. :-D

Solid cover for the sunroof and some type of power running board in that order.

I was thrilled my truck stop automatically lowering itself to wagon levels on the freeway.

100% biggest miss are grab bars in the front of the cabin. It's like all the internal testers never drove a truck in their lives and just figured it was okay to look like a jackass getting in and out of the truck cause you're trying not to destroy the beautiful seats. Yeah kneel mode is incoming but that's a incomplete and complex fix for something folks found a simple solution for long ago.
