Absurd.
If they really are going to send you a check for over $21K I would pocket the check and live with the damage. I could certainly live with that level of ugly for $20K.
No kidding. For $20k I could put some suction cups on that and pull it out and then ask dent removal joint to do their best....and keep the $19k for the effort.

9/6/22 : 4 months of trying my hardest to protect my vehicle from crazy south florida drivers and in my own driveway is where i end up getting hit. so let's find out how good the Rivian certified collision centers are.

update 9/7/22 : Spoke with State farm (other guys insurance, the at-fault guy) they were very pushy trying to get me to go to one of their collision centers, I said no way, I want a certified Rivian center. I ended up going to Collision Care Xpress, In Pompano Beach, FL. While i was there they were working on 2 other Rivians (this is the Collision center the Rivian Miami SC is using) people were nice and very friendly, told me about 2 weeks wait on the parts and 2-3 weeks repair time, They said more than likely entire driver side will be replaced, not sure from where to where this would be. They said Rivian will go over the photos and will advise on the repair.

update 9/12/22 : So i got the quote from the Collision center, They quoted the repair at $ 21,195.95 , I really dont know much about body work and repairs, but I want to hear peoples opinion on this. They are still awaiting to hear back from State Farm, I assume they negotiate on pricing and then they go from there.

stay tuned for further updates.
Ugh. That's sickening.
I have some nice cars. But the Rivian is the one I worry about.

If there's no other underlying damage, replacing "the whole side" would be the panel, which continues into the roof line, not the doors or fender. Being body-on-frame, that side of the pickup bed should be a single piece, welded and glued to the body, bolted to the chassis … still a very expensive design decision which will result in these wildly expensive repairs for literally "fender bender" events that should be far less involved. The artistic "cost" of a cut line at the front of the bed would have made this a far less involved repair.

For a full body and paint repair, I'd normally look for top shops and get three bids and three opinions ... for a Rivian, I'm not so sure there's that many operators, but maybe in your area there are competitors. Opinions and options will vary widely depending upon the skillset and mindset at each shop. Some want to take on hard jobs in aluminum and an unfamiliar EV. Others will just bid $25K for the default process offered by Rivian (Rivian would be providing the collision repair instructions on exactly how to replace that quarter panel. It really looks like one of those "start by removing the headlights and work backwards from there" problems (to get to the roof assembly, etc.)

By the way, if that were mine (also white) looking at this one photo and not seeing a lot of Rivians other than owning mine, I'm just thinking out loud, not purporting to be anyone other than a Rivian enthusiast, having owned and operated my own independent shop (race and engine, not body) years ago, having fixed more than a few customer cars as a "courtesy" for working on their race cars, I'd have a top flight body shop work that out "in the metal" … sort of an over-the-top paintless-dent-removal "PDR" job. It wouldn't be cheap (far cheaper than $20K … maybe $5K out of pocket, no insurance would agree, but they can't stop you) and then I'd have maybe a few blemishes permanently in the paint if that upper crease line is severe near where there's a chip of paint gone. Most body shops would understand how to do this but not be willing to take on a new customer with a challenging and open-ended risky job in an unfamiliar vehicle type … you'd have to find someone willing to take this approach and willing to trust you to pay them even when the repair is abandoned and you end up going back to the ensurer and saying "nope, that didn't work out, so we're back to Plan A." (Which I've done.) If this was a known quantity rear quarter of a Porsche 911, there are shops that would say "park it over there, next to those two with the same dent" and I'm sure that will become the case with the Rivian because of this design, but it's going to take years for shops to build up the experience, starting with much smaller impacts.

This approach could also result in the vehicle off road for maybe a week (once the shop is ready to take it) and back with no paint, no "story" about why a whole quarter got painted, a new panel stitched in, etc.

The trick is to work around the factory Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren, Lambo dealers to find the shops they use for the high end work. Then get a few opinions and book a time probably months out.
Just keep before/after photos for resale value and to remove any doubt of there being a much worse story behind this repair. Good luck! : )

Yeah I am the same with with USAA and went with them automatically (not expecting to have a deer hit me on the second day of ownership). I will be making it very clear to them though that if they make this situation difficult I will be perfectly happy to find a new insurance provider for ALL of my vehicles and will hope that matters enough to them to not drag their feet.

This thread is a strong recommendation for Rivian insurance. I like USAA but wouldnt want to fight a battle over a $22,000 rear corner dent or find my insurance double on year 2 because of these repair costs.
That only helps when you are at fault. In this case, he still needs to fight with State Farm over what they agree to pay.

Ugh, State Farm is just painful to deal with.

I have State Farm and they still haven't fully approved the rates for a repair place I picked to repair my Winnebago Revel after it got hit while I was legally street parked in Portland.

The accident happened back in May, and the person who hit my van took off, and the video I have of it doesn't show the license plate.

State Farm is pushing back on the RV labor rates despite that I have the Van insured as an RV.

The worst part is its like 4-5 days wait for a response.

We have such bad drivers, and distracted or under the influence drivers that we should be driving bumper cars instead of nice things like the Rivian.
everyone including the collision center told me the same about. state farm. I'm hoping it is going to be a smooth process, but i already have a feeling this may drag on since state farm has yet to come up with their estimate, its been already a week, and still nothing.

My collision center technician said the same - State Farm was the worst to work with and he was really glad I was with Nationwide. He'd only worked with Nationwide once before but he said they were very easy and reasonable to work with. He told me a few horror stories about people with State Farm and what the process looked like from his end. I left pretty happy with my choice as well ?

(I have my motorcycles and my former vehicle on Progressive and they've been pretty good, but I haven't had to deal with them through a claim. I did have State Farm years ago on an F-250 that was totalled (not at fault) and I don't remember the process being difficult, but I also just got paid out for the total loss and didn't have to deal with repairs.)

My experience has been you can use YOUR insurance company, pay your deductible, then request they subrogate with the at-fault party's insurance. I've had to do this, and it took a couple months (the two insurance companies ended up at arbitration) but I was eventually refunded my deductible when they were reimbursed by the at-fault party's insurance.

What makes the state farm issue even more amusing is that the state farm hq is just down the road from the factory. Rivian should send some folks over to educate them.

That’s interesting, I could have sworn their HQ was in the ninth circle of hell.

20k for a dent. Unreal

Seeing the way people drive out here it makes me wonder if I should just keep my subaru instead, paying for premium gas is much less than this...

It could be like Stranger Things where their HQ is located in a spot that has a thin layer between it, and the upside down.

If I ever need to add some good to this world I'll search gofundme for any mention of State Farm and donate money to help those impacted by hellishness of that insurance company.

That being said I remain hopeful for the OP's sake. Its probably too soon to automatically conclude state farm will screw them over.

My advise is to shop around. I had a similar incident leading to a dent on that same panel. The two nearest Rivian approved body shops were 4 hours away from me. The first one quoted me $7K which was crazy! The second one fixed it for $3K.

Also, once you find someone to work on it, take plenty of pictures of the entire car. The shop fixed my dent but the put on a couple of scratches on the car which I know they weren't there when I dropped it off but they claimed they were. They had pictures and I had none so I couldn't argue.
So Dr. Mario got the same job already done for 4k? Did they replace the whole panel? Sounds like you are being taken for a ride, the shop probably has no idea how to estimate labor on this?
