Random sidenote: For those that have ever experienced a pedal vibration, or "warped rotors" in another vehicle, this same procedure will take care of that 99% of the time as you're just feeling brake pad deposits on the rotors. Getting them good and hot will remove those deposits and they'll feel like new again.

My daily driver has Brembos all around, and I don't use them often. As a result, they get a glaze on them and need a good hard braking or two to clean the pads/rotors off. As mentioned before, doing it once a month keeps the brakes ready to go when I do need them.

In 34 years of driving I have never heard of this process once. Not on a simple Mazda, Audi S3, BMW, Infiniti, Acura, nothing. I understand what you are saying but just would never imagine this is something you have to do on a new car and dealers would tell you to do this prior to doing any amount of driving.
In cars without regen braking, when it’s a new car or a car that’s had the brakes done, bedding in of pads and rotors happens with the mechanic’s road test incidentally. Or when being moved around at shipping terminals-time is money there

With a vehicle like the rivian, by the time it gets to the customer it’s likely that the brakes have only Been engaged to hold the truck at a stop.

it would be easy enough for Rivian to add a step in EOL checks or PDI to bed the brakes.

I have never heard of having to do this on any new car. Ever.
That’s because it’s something that is done in normal driving pretty early on after picking up a new ICE car that doesn’t brake with its motors.

There's another warning on the screen when you make the turn at a much higher speed than intended because regen didn't slow you down as much as anticipated. I tried to take a photo of it but it disappeared quickly and didn't feel like trying again just to do it. It's different than the others because it popped up on the left side of the driver's screen.
I hate to say it but there needs to be a warning with an okay to continue when you start the vehicle and breaking is not going to work the same. Maybe there can be a don't remind me again option but it's going to cause a bad day for somebody at some point.

I didn't use my Model S much at all during the COVID years but I swear it's behavior was, the regen was always there but you always had to break on your own to stop the car. Then I got used to a number of trips in the Rivian breaking completely for me. Then you get in to drive it one day and then it's just not there, no breaking after letting off the accelerator. Then you add the poor stopping power and it's not a pleasant experience.

I feel like an idiot. What is bedding your brakes? I’ve never done that with any vehicle before…
Thank you brother, for taking one for the team. I have no ? idea what the OP is talking about and thought he meant doing something unseemly with brake pads! ?

I had a Tesla tech out at the house today to change the 12V Battery in the model X. I asked him about bedding the brakes and he said you should do it about once a month. The brake calipers don't get used much with the hard Regen and he said that rust can form on the disc and you want to bed the brakes to eliminate and Smooth out any rust. Speed up to 60 and then use your left foot to brake firmly before the hard Regen kicks in on the Rivian. He was very helpful and answered every question. He thought the Rivians were cool. He did not recommend the Lightning (mostly due to usable range issues. HE said he was waiting for the cyber truck. To each his own

Didn’t knew that either. I did hard braking one time on my R1T got good response. So not sure still need to bed my breaks. May be I will. What do I have to loose.

I was sitting next to a Tesla Model Y at a light this morning and noticed the front rotor was completely rusted, I’m not saying just rain spotting … this is sound advice ;)

Bumping this thread:

Anyone know if final check at SC now includes Brake Bedding?

How about are you/is it recommended to dust them regularly? I think 1x / month was mentioned?

Seems especially important before any towing and/or cold weather when regen might be reduced.

Once a month is still good advice, they really don’t see much activity at all with normal driving and regen. You’ll have better results getting into the brakes if you put the truck into Snow Mode first since it has the lowest regen of all.
