Rivian will open its RAN charging station network to all EVs -- says RJ Scaringe

Today the RAN chargers are open to non- Rivians, right? I saw a Polestar charging in one and there’s no indication that it’s checking the vehicle it’s plugged into.

Maybe they thought they were charging..? My understanding is they are currently Rivian only.

I think it was a fast charger but didn’t look too closely, so might have been mistaken. This was in Coos Bay, if I recall correctly

Why do I feel like somehow Rivian won’t get tax breaks for opening up their chargers? Even if they are supposed to.

If Rivian recoups 80% of costs for RANs and allows other cars to charge on them, this becomes a positive cash flow revenue channel, so it should be accretive to the stock price.

How about one...JUST 1 in New England. Unreal....

Oh, get over it already. There are currently only 22 RAN chargers. Even if they were spread out one per state that would mean there are 28 states, 10 provinces, and 3 territories without a RAN charger. And starting off by putting 1 in every state just to make everyone feel good would be a stupid strategy. BTW, there is only 1 RAN charger in Washington state right now, and we are just as big as the entire region of New England, so in context I have a hard time buying that you're being ignored - there are plenty of other chargers you can use in New England and a RAN charger is not a requirement for driving a Rivian.

Rivian started rolling out the RAN in California, which makes total sense. Not because CA is more "adventurous" than other states but because it makes sense to bootstrap the network by building near their headquarters within reach of the designers and technicians who are developing and servicing the network. And it makes sense to expand the network by placing new stations near existing stations, growing outwards. Having single stations scattered all over the nation, not within range of each other, would again be stupid.

In fact, Tesla's strategy for rolling out the Magic Dock stations is following the same pattern isn't it? Those few are concentrated in New York for now. Why are they ignoring the rest of the country?

So what would be YOUR plan to roll these out that would both make business sense and satisfy everyone? Maybe your plan would be to build 600 sites / 3600 chargers all at once and open them up simultaneously? You'd still get complaints - "Oh there are 600 stations and we only got 10 but we are SO much more adventurous than those other states ..."

The "Coming soon" locations are the next ones being built and not the *only* ones planned. Rivian took down the map that had all of the planned locations because too many people were complaining and misinterpreting what it meant. "Coming soon" was meant to reduce expectations and to better indicate priorities. The two that are "coming soon" to Texas right now are just the first that will be put in Texas.

They might be able to get federal funding on new stations, but I don't think they're counting on that. All that money gets funneled through each state so its probably going to be a pain to get it. Plus there are rules on payment which have already been mentioned.

As I understand it they always had the plan on opening it up and they were just waiting on the implementation of a payment system.

For us customers I think it actually helps us.

It prevents ICE'ing as the chargers are going to have more presence than just the occasional Rivian owner. Most of the ICE'ing I've seen at Rivian chargers are of the "no one is around so I'll park here" variety. Most people will want to avoid conflict so they'll park somewhere else if they see someone charging.

It also helps Rivian in generating at least some revenue. Not much, but better than a charger sitting unused.

Not a requirement under the NEVI rules. They just have to use a touchless payment system and have a phone number as an alternative. An app counts as a touchless payment system under the rules.

Didn't know that. Thought NEVI meant a physical reader. Also, pretty sure NEVI requirements are just recommendations to the states

Bravo, the more the merrier!!. Discount and priority for Rivian owners, but open to all to use if chargers available!
