I recently got a 1-inch gash on the stock 21” tires far away from rivian center or tire shop that stocks 21” inch scorpions. Was essentially 24 hour ordeal to patch, tow, find replacement and have it installed, as I am now 1300 miles from home on road trip and can’t live on Rivian service timelines. I am seriously considering switching to 20” tires, as it would be easier to get spare, and many more selection options, that are more reasonably priced. Concerned about that loss of range. Interested if anyone had similar experience and switched.

Do you mean 20 inch wheels? I chose the 20 inch wheel for exactly this reason (available tire alternatives). I then switched out the AT tires for AS Scorpions (also Pirelli) and get the same efficiency as the 21 inch wheels or better. My average over the past 500 miles has been about 2.6 mi/kwh in a combo of city and hwy.

That is really interesting. I was wondering about doing that, but concerned about range. What is your max range at 100% on the 21”s setup that way?

exact reason i picked 20s. even 22s would give you more options. 20s have the most options of the 3. its a heavy vehicle so id say try to get more sidewall with the 20s to reduce chance of sidewall blowouts.

It depends on the tire you want and who you plan to install them. There are not that many 20” lightweight AS tires that fit the load index of a Rivian (I’ve counted 3) but it is still a better option than the 21’s. Chain stores follow the load of 116 like gospel but 115 opens up maaaaany options and it seems mom and pop tire shops are less rigid since the load is so close. Either way 20” is a better bet IMO. This is assuming you want the same diameter tire as your 21’s.

I think you mean my max range on the 20 inch wheel AS setup. I consistently get between 350 and 360.
I'm assuming this is in conserve mode? Or all purpose?

Sorry about your predicament...especially on a road trip. I see a couple options:

Stay with the 21s: The biggest Debbie Downer for these wheels is the odd-ball size and the easiest way to overcome it is to get a full-size spare from the Shop and carry it with you. At least this way you'd be able to keep going on long trips.

Go to the 20s: This will be a pricier option as you'd have to get 4 wheels. I ordered the 20s on my truck as they came with the spare. Until the stock tires wear out, I'll keep the ATs on the truck. When it comes time to replace, I may go with AS in either the original 65 series or the 60 series (which is essentially the same as the 21" diameter). My challenge is I drive to the mountains a lot in the winter so I want the 3PMS rated tires for better all-around usage. In about 2200 miles of driving, I've averages 1.9m/kWh. Note that that includes two trips to the Lake Tahoe area from The SF Bay (which means a lot of altitude gain). Overall on a 100% charge in AP, my truck is saying about 280 miles, and close to 310 in conserve.

Is there a definitive list of tires that have been tried on the 20" (and 22") wheels? We need one with info like range impact, cost, etc.

I have 21” wheels. If I could do it over, would have gotten the 20” ATs, seen whether the range impact really effect me, and either kept the AT or found AS. I tend to switch for winter anyway, so I have little side account saving up for the 20” wheels.

At some point this “summer” they’ll stock the deflated spare for the R1S. Maybe I will pick that up.

Have you looked at ordering from Tire Rack with delivery to a tire shop near you?
They are in stock.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
I’m going to plug uTires.com here - I found the OE ATs there, and picked up a barely used pair for $250. It was a gamble, but it paid off.

Free shipping. Got to me in 3 days. YMMV.
