Dropped off the R1S at my detailer today for a wash, and when I picked it up noticed a windshield crack that starts at the center roofline, extending down across the area covered by the mirror and sensors. Vehicle sat in the sun most of the day until they could get to it, so it's possible that the crack resulted from the thermal stress of cold water on hot glass. Just as likely - we just got back Tuesday from a road trip from Portland to Utah, and very likely could have picked up a chip on the highway that expanded into a crack.

What sucks is we have an overloading trip to Vancouver Island next week, and I'm concerned about making that long trip with a crack that could expand significantly at the worst time. Contacted Rivian service, and the earliest they can fit me in is the end of August for a windshield replacement I asked if possible to expedite, but because it's not currently in the field of view, it's not deemed a safety issue and they won't move up the appt.

I'll be closely tracking whether the crack gets worse over the next few days, but curious whether others have had experience with progression of a windshield crack, and any advice around going forward with the trip provided it doesn't get worse between now and middle of next week.

Just drive with a cracked windshield until you can get in for it to be fixed. As long as it doesn’t spiderweb in front of the driver and become a safety hazard for visibility then it doesn’t matter. I’ve driven with cracked windshields for years before replacing rather than put a new one in each spring when the winter’s road gravel inevitably cracks it.

Got a rock chip right at the bottom. Got it fixed right away, tech told me it could still crack due to the location (edge, AC vent location, bad luck). Sure enough it expanded on a hot day with AC on. When it started, it went from bottom to top in a matter of hours.

Part of the concern is that it seems like the jury is still out on the durability of the Rivian glass vs other manufacturers. I'd probably be less concerned if my Jeep had the same crack. The next 3-4 days might tell me what I need to know, and I might try to stress it a bit by removing the sunshade and taking it over some rough roads.

Man I got a chip in front of the passenger, ordered from amazon the fill kit, did my best (which probably is not great) but the truck was recently at the service center in Texas heat, daily exceeding the 133F cabin heat sensors (checked daily at home) and I was pleasantly surprised it didn't turn into a crack

You couldn't have asked for a better path for it. Had it gone within camera or sensor view, you would have issues with Driver+ as well as some nagging notifications. That type of crack will ultimately continue on. How quickly depends on the stress in the glass - and every windshield is different that way. Be thankful with the August appointment. Many people have had to wait 2-3 months for a windshield replacement.

Anyone have experience with using Safelite to replace a Rivian windshield? I originally thought only the service centers could calibrate, but I was speaking offline to a well-known and loved member of this forum, and he suggested going the Safelite approach, even though it may not be factory glass. That could speed things up a bit potentially.

Having just got a quote for glass replacement from an autobody shop since they would have to do the recalibration, and had gotten a quote from safelite, much less expensive (~$750) to go with the autobody shop. There are a lot of good glass replacement shops out there, I'd look them up before going to safelite.

All car manufacturers' window SUCK. We have a 2021 RAV4 Prime and we were driving to Vegas and a pebble.....P E B B L E (not a stone) hit the window and chipped it. We had it fixed immediately when we got to Vegas. Then 2 weeks later, another chip was on my way to work. It was a little bigger and the guy said "This will prevent it from getting bigger but you will still see it". We still haven't replaced the windshield.....when it starts spidering and becoming a distraction we will have it replaced.

I had a 2004 Dodge Magnum and a ROCK (about 1") hit the window, bounced off and NOTHING cracked or broke.

I think windshields these days are made different because of regulations.

If Safelite has the glass, they can easily replace. They aren't trained/certified to calibrate yet, so that has to go to SC to finish up.

Any of the listed Rivian certified body shops can replace glass too. I'm unsure about calibration, I think they have a Rivian tech come in to calibrate and finish the job.

If it were me I'd get that fixed asap. Just from reading horror stories on the forums, any windshield crack is likely to expand exponentially within hours/days. ?? Good luck, let us know what you decide to do!

I got a spiderweb crack in my R1S windshield in the first 350 miles of driving (passenger side). I had safelite come and fix it and he was looking at the windshield manufacturer and he said they are a big glass company from China that manufacturers in the US. He "fixed" the windshield to maintain structural integrity. He seemed to think the manufacturer was not a great one that liked to cut corners even though they supply a lot of manufacturers.

This was the first spiderweb crack I've had in probably a million miles of driving!

I always try to buy American when I can because 99% of the foreign junk breaks.

I just got a windshield crack from a thrown rock with only 200 miles on the odometer. To speed repair, Rivian recommended I have it replaced at a local Rivian certified auto body shop. The shop is getting me in early next week to look at it, then ordering the new shield from Rivian. Replacement and calibration appointment to be scheduled when they get the glass.
