All states will probably do this once EV's reach critical mass, just a matter of time.
I don't disagree with you, but what irritates me to no end is taxpayers subsidize the oil industry to the tune of $20 Billion dollars a year for what experts overwhelmingly believe is almost no return and yet we are penalizing consumers who are trying to reduce their carbon footprint to make up for lost gas (polluting) tax revenue.

How about we stop subsidizing Big Oil and use that money to offset the inevitable gas tax revenue loss when we increase EV adoption?

I just renewed my Oklahoma State state license plates, and now there’s a new $400 EV tax that owners of electric vehicles must pay in addition to the usual registration fee every time they renew their license plates.
I know I did not vote for this.
It's because your state is not getting fuel taxes from you any more. The fuel taxes pay for the roads. When everyone goes electric the states will have a deficit in their road maintenance funds if they dont make it up another way. SC charges an extra $120 to register an EV.

Virginia has the alternative of plugging a gadget into your OBD port and let them track your mileage to pay less. I'm not a tin foil hat guy (I work with the Federal Gov), but forget that noise.

Of course in VA we pay income tax, sales, tax, town property tax on cars/homes/property, county tax on cars/homes/property....

Illinois charges an extra $100 registration fee per year for an EV license plate. I drive my R1T maybe 5000 miles a year so the extra $100 is a savings over the per gallon Illinois gas tax not including the fed tax and assuming I get 20 MPG on my ICE vehicle. Illinois also set aside $12,000,000 to give a $4,000 cash incentive to purchase an EV. Would that money have been better used in the road maintenance fund? I'm not complaining as I did get my check but just a thought....

I think some more progressive states like Colorado may never do it; fully recognizing the value of shifting towards EV.

Washington State is trying to move to monitoring your vehicle and charging you for every mile you drive. So be happy with a flat tax for now.

That being said, it's absolute BS.
It’s really not. The taxes are for roads, so it’s really not a big deal. Same as gas tax, which you no longer pay.

It may take a while but all states will eventually follow suit once they find a way to streamline odometer readings. Politicians are experts at finding ways to increase taxes to match increased spending.

I’m in favor of paying my fair share for infrastructure. A mileage and weight formula accomplishes this. But it all goes back to your local/state fund. I expect the feds to get in on the action too.

All taxes are extortion. But taxes that actually pay for roads annoy me the least.

We all have to re-register the vehicle every year. Report actual mileage each year under penalty of perjury. Really paranoid states can require a photo of the old registration slip and odometer in the same shot to be uploaded or presented to the teller at the DMV.

Mileage x weight (exponential scale to account for actual road damage) directly to a road fund that politicians can't raid for other purposes

+

mileage x pollution surcharge that goes directly to fund cleaning up the superfund sites, fugitive emissions and flaring monitoring, zombie wells left by fossil fuel bankruptcies, etc. I.e., oil users supplement the costs of undoing the mess big oil is making. Ratchet up these charges a little bit every year, until it's simply uneconomical to run fossil fuels.

See how easy. No go do it politicians.

Offsets the lack of gas tax revenue. Multiple states are doing this due to perceived reduction in revenue from ICE consumption.

But there is limited transparency on how the amount is set. Let’s use a hypothetical example:

State tax on a gallon of gas = 0.52

$400 EV equivalent / 0.52 = ~769 gallons annual consumption

average ICE fill up : 18 gallons

fill ups per year: ~42

YMMV

It obviously varies widely based on consumption. A flat tax that disregards usage is “regressive” and favors the government coffers. I expect politicians will find a way to make it “progressive” based on income.
The other thing not being factored in here is that a tax is applied if you use a DC fast charger and if you charge at home there are taxes collected for energy use. These are not equivalent to the gas tax, but should definitely be factored in when deciding to add an EV tax.

It really is.
An EV tax is completely reasonable to help for roads however the current implementation is still BS especially $400 in OK.

OH State tax on a gallon of gas = 0.385
$200 EV equivalent / 0.385 = ~519 gallons annual consumption
PreEV Our annual consumption with our Navigator and Honda Civic = ~675 gallons or $260 of gas tax
We drive the similar amount now with 2EVs and a Hybrid and pay $500 in "gas tax".

Explains it. Paying fail share would be half that, approximately. Or a per mile fee fee for all vehicles.
