Rivian needs to push V2H update

Seems like there is one glaring downfall of the Rivian in the comparison discussions. In most areas they either match or exceed the CyberTruck and Lightning. But the ability to do V2H (and even V2G) is sorely still lacking in the Rivian despite promises to allow for it. Not a good look to not uphold promises. Having a proper V2H would even make the paltry 110V in the bed more palatable. Thoughts?

IIRC, RJ has said that every Rivian that has been sold has hardware compatible with V2H.

I meant the hardware you plug into the Rivian. Several companies claim to have things in the works but none of them are delivering on it yet.

I agree, seems like hardware is the holdup. I have not seen any CT instructions or demos so not sure at this point it is capable of doing it.

Lucid just released the VtoV on their vehicles, VtoH is supposed to be there as well.

Would be cool if the Lucid VtoV cable is universal and Rivian could enable that portion of the VtoX using it.

I'm not sure how that works. Would it be something that one would have to purchase from Rivian? Or would the manufacturer have to license from Rivian? I would assume that nothing happens unless the proper handshaking takes place.

I think that is the issue, they are just coming up with the standards so everyone is figuring it out. There are other pieces as well as you need a grid cutoff so during an outage you are not endangering workers sending power out to the grid. If you have solar with a battery system a lot of that will be in place then it is a matter of connecting to it but all starts with a bidirectional charger and vehicle software allowing the juice to flow out.

My R1T's vampire drain is still a concern. I wouldn't trust it to power my house without draining itself completely.

I saw Generac combined efforts with Wallbox yesterday, it seems like everyone is working hard on their alliances, it would be nice to see some products for this and Rivian to turn on the option...

It's not worth Rivian's effort at this point in time.

I'm not aware of any third party systems that are certified for the V2L standard and available for purchase, so Rivian would have to produce their own equipment in order for it to make sense for them to enable this feature.

The F150L has had a proprietary V2H system since launch and I would guess that 5 people have installed the necessary hardware. I'm exaggerating but the uptake has been low even though all ER trucks shipped with the Ford Charge Station Pro, a key expensive component of the home integration system.

Tesla has an advantage because the required hardware (universal wall connector+powerwall) is built into many homes already. I don't know that this capability is available at launch or if it's just a marketing talking point. It's also proprietary AFAIK.

Every new universal Tesla level two charger is supposed to support V2H. But it’s probably going to be limited to Cybertruck.

I saw that in the details on the Tesla site, what it does not explain if it is proprietary or standards based. It also does not say if it is for both NACS and J1772 or just NACS.

I’ll keep my eyes open but if anyone sees any new information would be great if they could share it here.

Unlikely it's currently standards based. Not sure if their EVSE has PLC compatibly so it might not ever work for a J1772 vehicle.

A buddy at Siemens told me they are working on a consumer V2H charger. Like so many others, 2024 is supposed to be the year. We’ll see.

Rivian is accepting the return of my wall charger, graciously. I never used the thing (portable charger on a 50a circuit works fine for us) and it’s still in the box. I probably will not get a wall unit until one with V2H capability exists.
