Man, I'm so jealous of all your vehicles that have stable enjoyable HVAC logic. That's still my #1. Even above vampire drain.
My advice is stop trying to micromanage it, set the temp you want at the start of your drive and leave it in auto. I get bad behavior if I try to make adjustments after it's already reached the setpoint. Typically pretty good if I just leave it alone.

I’d be happy to do any level of micromanagement if I could guarantee it would work. Unfortunately, per service escalation, not being able to control defrost is “working as designed” (https://www.rivianforums.com/forum/threads/broken-defrost-in-a-snowstorm.22187/)

Is your leave it alone over 72? If I set it for 72+ its fine. But if I set it for 68-70 I get a much colder cabin temp when it should be calling for heat. About to start an hour drive home and will grab a thermometer to test it out. Haven't tried with the most recent update. I usually just pick one side of the drive to have it on at 72 and off for the other half and let it drift.

No it's not. That's the problem. In my Porsche it's totally transparent. I never have to touch it, or even notice something is off. It just "works" in the background. With the Rivian it's always something like "why is it blowing cold air on my feet" or "why is it blowing hot air on my arms" or "why is the fan on so high" or "why did the vents turn off for the rear passengers"

I set mine to 67 in the summer and 69 in the winter. I agree that it initially blows cold air in the winter but then changes quickly to hot. Now I usually start the climate control a few minutes before I leave and it's warm when I get in.

Seems like something is wrong woth your truck, not the software. Mine is just like your Porsche or any of Mt previous Acura, Lexus, Jeep. I just ignore it at whatever it is set at. If slightly cold...I bump it up a degree....if slightly hot...bump it down a degree. But that is about it....just works...

Yeah same. 71.5 is the precipice between heaven and hell apparently. 71 = cold / 72 = heat. Regardless of outside temp, my mood, or position of celestial bodies.

Recirculating fan is too loud and fan is constantly at 3 when 1 is just fine.

Mine frequently turns on recirculate when I have it set to fresh air. It shows fresh air, but wants to outsmart me and be clandestine about it. I can tell because the recirculating fan is louder than it should be.

But hey… only 5 more months until we get the weed whacker AC again. :)

Oh wait… there I go again. Still pumped about this update.

68-72 typically.

Per service escalation of my defrost failure: “[…] improvements to the HVAC software will be available in future releases. It is best to leave the system in Auto mode between 68 and 74 degrees.”

I love the improvements in this upgrade, but HVAC is BY FAR a bigger deal to me, as defrost failures make this vehicle unsafe to drive in snowy adventures.

100% this. If I want cool, I go 70. If I want heat, 74. But 72 is the magic flip flopper.

Agree, there is something wrong with the HVAC...I have never had to wrestle with HVAC in any car, including many older ones as much as the Rivian. AC not cold enough, Auto fires off fans, different behavior all together with recirculate, etc. Just way worse than any car I have driver in many years. My 1967 Camaro is almost more intuitive...lol. Seems like some of the basics of the 1st version like HVAC, driver seat comfort (IMO) were basically given low priority over drive train/Infotainment, etc...

I wonder if some of the basicas are going to be improved in the 2.0 version, I guess we'll see...

I hope they do not change HVAC much, mine has been great in temps from low teens to 115.

I'd have to agree....mine works great. Range for me down to about 0F and up to ballpark 90F. But works as good as any vehicle I have had. Which makes me think there is some hardware issue with some trucks or software module not working correctly?

I've only had my R1T for a short while but reverse out of the driveway was jerky and hard to get smooth. Thought it was just me learning the vehicle.
This is due to the auto hold mode, which I wish could be turned off. It is not needed with one pedal driving.
