Taking delivery next week, then a long drive. It's my understanding a Tesla Tap can be used to adapt to CCS for a home charger. Can the same be done with a regular Tesla supercharger (not a magicdock?)

Absolutely not. However Rivian said they will be providing proper adapters for the Tesla superchargers once the agreement with Tesla is finalized and they figure out billing and the digital handshake with the supercharger. They said sometime after March.

This topic has been covered a lot in the recent weeks:
  • Tesla has not opened up Supercharger access to Rivians. Even with the correct adaptor, you will not be able to charge your vehicle at a Tesla Supercharger.
  • The only exception to the above is Superchargers that have MagicDock installed -- these Superchargers can be found using the Tesla app and filtering for non-Tesla charging options. These Superchargers have a built in CCS adaptor.
  • There is no definitive timeline for when Tesla will grant Rivians access to their Supercharger network. Ford and others are scheduled to gain access in February. If that goes according to plan, Rivian will probably come soon after.

To be clear, your "home" charger (I.e. a level 1 or level 2 charger) would need to be compatible with the J1772 plug. This can be done through readily available adaptors from Lectron for example.

CCS is only used for level 3 fast charging, as you mentioned for superchargers. CCS is essentially a J1772 plug, with the addition of two DC fast charging conductors.

I don't see a way to filter in the Tesla app; do you have to be a member to see the filter?

You might need to make an account, but you don't have to pay to find MagicDock superchargers. This is the UI you're looking for in the app:

Thanks. But if I search for George, WA, it shows two sites:
1. Quincy (supercharger, NOT MagicDock)
2. Moses Lake (supercharger, NOT MagicDock)
It doesn't even show George, which other sites show as having a MagicDock at the Microtel Inn & Suites
Same behavior with and without logging in

George and Moses Lake are both Magic Dock superchargers. I've been there. Both are just off 90.

Tesla calls the George location "Quincy" for some reason.

When you choose "Superchargers Open to non-Tesla", the *only* locations you will see are Magic Dock superchargers. 45 across the US and Canada last time I counted.

The Tesla Tap and any other NACS to J1772 (AC) adapter will not function on a Tesla Supercharger (DC).

ADDITIONALLY, THERE IS A STRONG CHANCE THAT THE SUPERCHARGER FRIES YOUR VEHICLE IF YOU TRY TO PLUG IN A DC CABLE INTO AN AC ADAPTER.

Sorry for the yelling. But that is so so so important.

I see ones at both George and Quincy so apparently there are three in that area. Thanks for the clarification.

Let me add more information to be clear.

To find Magic Dock chargers, I typically use the Tesla website: https://www.tesla.com/findus
Then select "Superchargers Open to non-Teslas" and deselect everything else. That will show you only the Magic Dock superchargers.

But if you also select "Superchargers" on this site, you will see both regular superchargers and Magic Dock superchargers. For the location in question, that looks like this:

Notice that the symbols for the two types of superchargers are different. The one in downtown George is just an ordinary supercharger and you can't charge there.

The one just a few miles east at the junction with 283 is a Magic Dock supercharger, and you CAN charge a Rivian at that one.

Thanks. Seems like a vehicle should be smart enough to protect against that, and plug standards would specify such protection. I will stick a big orange label on my tesla tap when it arrives...

Thanks, that helps a lot. Apparently the R1T driver who reported at the George location was actually at the Quincy one.
