For sh**ts and giggles, what would it take for you to trade your R1 for a refreshed model?

Currently have a R1S Dual Motor Max Pack. Would trade it if the refresh has:
  • Heat pump
  • NACS
  • New steering wheeL
  • Quieter air suspension/motors
  • Faster DC charging speeds
As someone who loves the existing R1S, got early adopter pricing, and tends to keep cars for 8-10 years, it's highly unlikely that ANY change would cause me to trade up after less than a year. I hope and expect the refreshed R1S to have some really nice improvements, but I'll stick to what I've got.

It's the same with my Porsche Taycan. The Taycan refresh is seriously improved over the original, but the original is still a brilliant car, and the changes aren't big enough to warrant spending huge money to upgrade early. I'll just wait until 2030 when EVs have solid-state batteries and thus charge nearly instantly and weigh a literal ton less than they do now.

That said.... a Rivian R1X with an 80s Martini rally wrap? The latent teenage rally fan in me could be tempted.

Nothing. My first-gen product is good enough and getting better with each OTA. And I don’t have that kind of $ laying around. Will I be envious of new capabilities? Probably. But not enough to prompt action. There will always be newer and better. Like any car I’ve owned, I knew and accepted that going in.

My list....

Meridian or equivalent audio make a come back.

More consistent build quality so I would know the new one would be as good or better than then one I have.

A trade in program that makes the math better than it is.

PTC make a comeback.

Something other than what we have seen as a possible next gen 20" wheel. I love my current dark 20's but not so much of that one we have seen as a possible change.

That's about it....love mine already.

Meridian name doesn't carry much weight to me. They should just go B&O or B&W. Jeep's move to adopt McIntosh was a brilliant marketing move. And that's what it's all about. Marketing.

The current product is enough for me to keep it 3-5 years.

these things will change like phones and you’ll realize you’re just chasing the carrot on a stick and dropping bags of cash while you do it.

I am good with that. I can say I love my Meridian. But I have no issue with it even being in house....if it is very well executed. Too many reports that current is not well executed.

I have zero complaints with the Rivian system. The complaint I have is lack of anti-rattle sound/vibration dampening. No matter how good the sound system is or what brand name gets slapped on it. It's not going to sound good when interior panels buzz and rattle. Come to think of it, there is one improvement they could make on hardware. Use better speakers, in either system and/or retune the base profiles to be less bass-biased—to hedge against premature distortion as volume is increased.

I must have got lucky on the vibrations too. Mine can go pretty bass heavy without inducing rattles. I had one right after delivery in subwoofer area, but pushing hard on enclose area seems to have seated something much better and never came back.

I have a few other rattles creeping in,, buy all road harshness induced.and don't show up with music. Music covers them. Might chase them when it warmer here.

Yes, Rivian build quality is all over the place. That's well known and documented. Just on the exterior alone, driver side vs passenger side, clearly built to two very different standards. That has to get better if they want to continue to demand the prices they've set.

an R1S XL version with Captains chairs would get me to upgrade... i have 4 kids from 18 months to 10 years old and they barely fit in the R1S. They are all going to be tall too...

This will work for probably the next 3-5 years, but my next car will unfortunately need to be larger.

Refresh this year ain’t gettin’ NACS.

I currently have an R1T Quad Large that I got at pre-increase pricing.

What it would take for me to switch:
* Heat pump
* NACS (which means this year’s refresh won’t be it)
* 800V architecture with 350kW peak charging rate (like Silverado EV) and a good charge curve that can hold >200kW to at least 60%.
* A true extra-modules Max Pack with well over 400 miles range
* A price that with trade-in credit for my R1T would cost me less than $20,000 to upgrade to get all of the above.

AKA: No, I’m keeping my R1T for a very long time.

Same pricing as current but you will get

R1S on R1T chassis

1000 hp enduro motors

lockers

800v architecture

optional captain chairs

automatic roof shade

high end audiophile grade speaker system

400 miles of range on standard battery

500 miles of range on large battery

600 miles with Max battery
that list would be amazing and may get my wife out of her Escalade. Captains Chairs were the deal breaker for us on the R1S, the rest of that list just looks like perfecting a great platform

I would trade tomorrow if they'd give me these options:

  • 6'+ steel bed

  • Extended cab with half-doors and flat back floor. Bonus if there's small storage boxes. My old 2007 Chevy Colorado did this the best (quick picture from Google, all of this stuff folded so the back floor was totally flat)

I honestly hate back seats and can count on one hand with a few fingers left over the number of times I've used them. I already pulled the headrests out of my Rivian so they're not obstructing the back window. Would prefer a short cab truck, but having the extra space behind the two front seats to set tools & equipment (secure, out of the weather) is nice.

Canoo's design isn't half bad, either, and I'm still rooting for them:
