UPDATED here
Not a good look for he replacement Lectron NACS adapter, be careful if you are using one for the first time as the QC may be less than satisfactory.

ORIGINAL POST
Seen in the Mach-E forum:

Warning - Safety Defect Found with Lectron NACS Adapter

Warning - A safety defect has been found with the Lectron NACS adapter that allows the Supercharger cable to unplug WITHOUT pressing the latch release. This can cause a dangerous blinding arc flash if the Supercharger cable was pulled out without pressing the latch first. Charging will not be stopped before cable removal, hence the arc flash risk. Charging expert Branden Flasch discovered the defect.

It appears the NACS latch pin was installed backwards, so the ramp is facing outwards instead of inwards. This means you have to press the latch down to insert the cable, but it will pull out WITHOUT squeezing the latch release. It should function the opposite way, push in, lock, and NOT release when pulled.

This issue may only affect some Lectron adapters. Please see this video for more information. If your Lectron adapter has this defect, please DO NOT USE IT and contact Lectron. This is a serious safety risk.

:facepalm:And that is why Rivian continued to emphasize not to use any 3rd party adapter and wait for the factory freebie. Per Rivian, the first batch of these adapters should be shipping out next week to the earliest Rivian owners. Yay :like:

So, there’s going to be about a 1-year backlog of T owners before they start shipping adaptors to S owners? Or are they going by pre-order instead of delivery dates?

Like, how did this get past Quality Control testing? Or this wasn’t tested?

Lectron is not Rivian, this is about one of the third party adapters.

Apparently qualify control is a foreign concept

This is really unfortunate. Beyond the safety issue, that big spark damages the Tesla cable’s connectors. Tesla may retaliate by forcing us non Tesla owners to do shit like register the serial number of the NACS adapter to ensure we only use the adapter they manufactured and supplied to Ford & Rivian.

or, Rivian knows which customers have been shipped the official Tesla supplied adapter. They nay not enable a customer‘s vehicle to charge when plugged in unless they’ve been shipped the official adapter.

Lectron’s apparent carelessness is more than a safety issue.

I think Rivian meant buyer that had taken delivery on a specific date and that's the date they prioritize by ?
These adapters may come in as batches from the manufacturer(s); they could be 100, 500, or 1000/batch or more, only Rivian/vendor(s) would know for certain. Based on my experiences, it's more cost effective for Rivian to purchase them in large quantities to take advantage of volume discounts and from multiple suppliers to minimize individual manufacturer's production constraints :fingerscrossed:

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

This is scary. Luckily no one has been hurt, yet. You would think Lectron would have tested their design before mass producing it. Seems like a major oversight.

Really obvious design flaw. No excuse for missing that.

Theoretically the control signal should end up lost first, so the station should shut down the power transfer immediately. I just don't know if it's typically fast enough in this kind of a situation, like if you trip over the charge cable while it's plugged in. The latch looks like it also still appears to end up depressed in the action of the removal, so for sure it should shut down power if it can react quick enough.
