These posts are hilarious.

Poster gripes about Rivian's shortcomings. Others post solutions. Poster comes back and provides more info, which, most of the time, has nothing to do with Rivian.

Maybe there should be a section called "it's not you Rivian, it's me" so we can aggregate these into one area.

I think part of the challenge here is that route planning in the app is suboptimal. I'll agree with OP that I wouldn't drive the route suggested.

I have a similar issue with a trip I'm planning to SE Utah this summer. Just to give a few examples, ABRP and the app are proposing two different routes. ABRP has the trip taking 19hrs, 29 minutes and the app has 27hrs, 15 minutes. I'm too lazy to convert the ABRP percentages into Rivian app miles, but it looks like there's a significant difference in efficiency assumptions.

OP: Go with the ABRP plan.

I did not point out Rivian's shortcomings, that was someone else saying that they don't use the route planner in the app. Someone offered a solution that isn't viable because one of the chargers along the proposed route is non-functional. That is not a Rivian shortcoming, either (chargepoint). BTW, I also pointed out that the infrastructure in nv sucks which is really my only problem. Vegas to Tucson is a piece of cake. This is my issue:

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Take 395 to Bishop, charge to 100%, then head to Vegas. It’s about 260 miles to the next charger but you should be able to make it just fine in conserve if you keep a light foot.

This is precisely what I needed to hear. Thank you!

My ABRP, which has been decently accurate so far, says to do this:

Rivian R1T R1S Reno to Tucson... Can't get there from here. 1713505867385-ox

I have my speed set to 110% of speed limit but it has the option to recommend going slower. This is the plan the previous poster wrote. Looks like going slow will get you to Vegas.

Also calculate the return trip. It’s going to be up hill.

In my experience the trip will be longer than calculated. You will certainly run into traffic issues in Vegas and Phoenix. And I’d also count on the fact that one or two charging stops at EA are going to suck. (Make sure you have a backup at each EA stop).

And you’d have to be strict with your time at charging stops. Don’t dawdle and don’t overcharge.

I moved from Tucson to Reno 8 years ago and I'd love to show my bad-ass truck to my family but a trip that took just under 15 hours in a 36' penske box truck would require over 23 hours due to lack of dcfc along the shortest route. There aren't even v3+ tesla superchargers I can't use until I receive my adapter.
Rivian saves southwest airlines.
I would go through SoCal (80 --> 5 --> 210 --> 57 --> 10). There are a ton of chargers on the way. Sacramento has a RAN, Manteca has a RAN, Santa Nella, Buttonwillow does as well.

I went to Plug-Share and entered Reno to Tucson and got this. You obviously need to add about an extra 2 hours I would think to be safe.

Hold on a minute, I'm less disappointed. I see that the abrp route includes a quick charge in beatty, NV. The lvl 3 there hasn't worked in at least 3 years. That's a 3 hr lvl2 charge. One of the governor's abandoned units.
Once we get our Tesla Adapters we can use the Tesla chargers there.

A few years ago there was a hot topic on Tacoma forum I frequented. Several posters were upset re: how California does not have reciprocity with other states with regard to conceal and carry weapon permits.

Not saying this has anything to do with this situation and not sure it is even true, as any such law would not effect me, even if I were passing through.

But people there were convinced it was true and seemed very offended.

If someone with knowledge and experience posts that this is or even was BS, I'll happily delete this post.

Otherwise, it *might* provide an insight into why some people are "allergic" to CA.
You are correct about California reciprocity with concealed carry. I do have a CCW in California and I also have a UTAH permit (even though I don't live there). Utah allows to other residents of California to get OUT OF STATE resident permit, I can carry in 32 other states. It was only $60 to get it and it is good for 5 years.

R1t qm. I find myself allergic to California. It's a crap-shoot getting through @ 65mph average VS 25.
I have no idea where you are driving in California which is 25mph unless you are driving the 405 in downtown L.A. at 4 pm on a weekday. I stay away from SoCal and S.F. (unless I have too) not because of traffic, but because of those areas SUCK!.

I drive to work 145 miles. I leave at 3:15 in the morning and it takes me 2.5 hours to get to work. On my way home it takes about 3 hours. I drive on average 70mph the whole time.

I drove from Phoenix last April with my Nephews in his ICE truck. We went through SoCal and 2 gas stops and 1 food stop and it took 13.5 hours in total.

You're right, you didn't point out Rivian's shortcomings...you griped lack of DCFC's "preventing" you from making the trip in less time than blah blah blah.

So 1) you griped about charging, which has nothing to do with Rivian and 2) complained about something, people posted a solution, then you came back with more info why the trip won't work, which is due to your own issue.

So maybe this belongs in EV charging infrastructure forum.

Just a quick note worth making about the route planner in the Rivian app: It assumes current vehicle SOC as the initial SOC for the trip (if someone knows how to change this, please let me know). This makes the app pretty useless for planning future trips.

So,

To plan a road trip, use ABRP.

To answer the question, "Can I get from A to B RIGHT NOW (with a big buffer)" use the Rivian planner.

You can change the starting and ending SOC in the app.

put in your start and stop points
there will be a battery icon next to your start point. It’s in there.
