I just bought an M12 unit for myself to see how well it works since it's a lot smaller and more convenient to tuck away in my truck than the M18, and I'm carrying mostly M12 tools at any given time.
The m12 unit really is a sweet deal. I use the 2ah batteries and it barely drains them. Granted I really only use it with motorcycle tires but it would get the job done in full size truck tires too I reckon.

I have the M12 inflator, and it it's great for topping off any "normal" sized tire, but if you're airing down and then back up it's not the correct tool. Takes too long to even air up a 31" tire from 20-36 PSI.

I have used the onboard compressor in my R1T four times. Once to get the tires back up to proper inflation, and three times to pump up my grandson’s footballs and a new basketball. That might sound silly, but it was really cool to be able to do that for him and he became very impressed with the R1T. He’s 10 now. But maybe he’ll maintain his enthusiasm for EVs.

Interesting responses.

Pretty sure there weren’t any responses saying an onboard compressor is unnecessary or not as good as a portable when only the gen1 was being sold.

I barely used my R1S on board compressor and used a portable one instead (connected to a Jackery). The Costco portable one (listed above) is also handy. The Camp Speaker and compressor were gimmicks to me. A few more 110V outlets and USB-c ports would have been more useful.

If you don't option the built in air compressor, they ship with one in the frunk.

In my other cars, MB and Tesla, I carry this Ryobi mobile inflator. Works really well and the battery stays charged for ever. Link
We have the Dewalt equivalent. I don't understand why people get so excited about built-in air compressors. The battery-powered inflators are compact, cheap, work well and don't require dealing with a long hose.

The one I bought on Amazon for $22 is significantly more convenient to use than the built in one. I use it weekly to inflate my MTB tires. It’s a big hassle to unwind the car compressor hose, get the right adapter, pull it to wear it needs to go, then rewrap it. Will probably never use the Rivian one again.

Could always tap the onboard compressor for the suspension. Won't be able to do setpoint fill like the accessory one, but at least it'd be something in an emergency (besides the included 12V emergency compressor)
That's a great way to void your warranty and ruin your air suspension. I don't know why someone would even bother to figure this out when there is a perfectly fine option already provided with the vehicle.

I wouldn't use it to run air-tools or anything. I'd have no qualms about running it to fill a repaired flat tire. No way a single use like that would be enough to damage anything.

Tapping into the air suspension runs the risk of leaks at the bare minimum. Porsche tapped into the vehicle's air suspension to emergency tire inflation and it caused issues. They now include a 12v compressor. I don't understand why this is a viable solution when there is already a 12v compressor included for emergencies?

I read your post and I'm confused as to why even bring up the idea of tapping into the air suspension system at all when in the same post, you mention a perfectly fine solution which is included with the vehicle already?

Here's another whacky viable solution if we were talking about ICE motorcycles. https://prismmotorcycles.com/products/jiffy-pump
