Going to disagree, and I'm a Milwaukee fan that does have their air compressor.

On board air is always there, doesn't need batteries, and doesn't take up any additional space. However, most people will never use it.
It's much quicker and easier to get out a portable compressor than to use the on board one. I'd rather use a portable battery powered one.

True, not to mention the hose that doesn't fit easily in the bag.

Those portable battery operated ones are not as beefy as what is on the R1 platform. I have a portable Dewalt one and it is way slower, I assume the free included one will be even worse.

To OP if you are worried about it then $650 upgrade and you've got it.

To those worried about wrapping the cord back up maybe @LivingInKaos can sell us some hose reels??? I saw myself a prototype and ?

I don't find the onboard compressor better than the decent portable ones. Seems to fill up tires at about the same rate. That Ryobi one linked earlier is what I have.

I suggest you try it side by side and find out. I know I did airing up after off roading (going from 30-50psi) and I could do two tires with the R1 compressor compared to my Dewalt but maybe that one you have is way better I just know my personal experience with what I have.

You might have more experience with the on board compressor. I found that by the time I got out the hose, reset the pressure for all 4 tires, etc; it took longer than just using a portable one. The on board compressor is faster than the portable one but the prep to get the on board compressor is much longer for me.

I went to keeping the air line in a much bigger coil in the bed compartment. Only a couple loops so it’s a quick and easy deploy and plug in. I didn’t like stuffing it back in the little bag.

I’d like to test the portable battery one VS onboard. To raise all 4 tires from 25 psi to 50psi. I’m not confident there is enough juice in the portable for the overland/off-road intentions on the onboard.

I recon most folks will not be using it for these purposes, but I certainly do.

In my other cars, MB and Tesla, I carry this Ryobi mobile inflator. Works really well and the battery stays charged for ever. Link
Oh I didn’t realize they updated the form factor!
I still have my ryobi in the gear tunnel as the high volume mode is nice to get my iSUP mostly filled and then one cycle of the on board get me tuned to the right psi

Has anyone measured the cfm of the installed Rivian system? This would be a good number to judge by. Numbers, we need numbers.

So now that Rivian stopped including onboard air as a standard feature, what are you new-to-be Gen2 owners going to do in the event you are on a road trip and get a puncture or a slow leak, and there is no gas station with air available? Last time I drove home from Las Vegas my buddy got a nail in his tire, we pulled it out, plugged it, and pumped it back up using a simple 12V air compressor, all while on the side of the road; 30 minutes later we were back on the road and the fix got us home where he was able to get a new tire at his convenience. This saved us a tow truck and probably a half-day delay.

I have a good 12V compressor but it requires connection to a traditional large car battery with enough amps to get the job done. Looking at the Rivian shop hardly any of the R1S vehicles come with onboard air now, definitely not for the config that I'm looking for. So this begs the question, what other solutions are out there?
It would be nice if they left it…but you can buy a handheld Ryobi air compressor with rechargeable battery for about $65….”portable air compressor”

I have both, and honestly, the Milwaukee unit is faster/more convenient than dealing with a long air hose anytime you need a little air. That being said, I "gave" my employees the M18 unit I had since I don't use it all that often. Our business sells bulk potting soil and compost to a lot more homeowners in the spring than the rest of the year, some of whom show up with trailer tires that need some more air to be safe, and it was a more convenient quick-fix option than having to send customers from our loading area to our shop.

I just bought an M12 unit for myself to see how well it works since it's a lot smaller and more convenient to tuck away in my truck than the M18, and I'm carrying mostly M12 tools at any given time.

I also got a couple shorter hoses (one 10', another 15' coiled) to have tucked away that are easier to manage for inflating other people's tires, my bike tires, or rear tires (and when both are connected, I can reach the front tires). I'm going to try both to see which is faster/more convenient, but I do think the onboard air is one of those party tricks that seems like a game changer in theory, but there are plenty of other more affordable solutions that barely take up any space—at least if you already own any modern power tool system batteries.
