Headed to Edisto Island SC. Don’t see any chargers on the island.

relative of mine said they installed a charger for his Porsche EV. Was just lent a picture. Looks like a slow burn charger, essentially just an outlet for super slow charging.

I dont think I would use it for anything above 20amps.. That wire does not look like it would handle it.

OP.. read the specs on the black cable that feeds the outlet. The wire gauge is printed every few feet. Also, as suggested above, find the breaker.. that will tell the tale.

What is the amperage on the breaker?
Yes this is the correct thing to do, find out how many amps the breaker is, my guess is 40 or 50. You can double check the wire, but it looks like a new install and the correct wire was probably chosen. I have a 50 amp breaker and charge at 40 amps. A 20% to 80% charge takes about 8 hours for me.

It is a NEMA 14/50 outlet so you can plug your portable charger into it.

As others have said, look at the marking on the wire sheathing, should be 6AWG, then find the breaker box and see what the breaker rating is.

Based on Wire rating and breaker rating choose whichever has the lowest rating and go 80% of that.

These are the normal ratings to think about

For Romex, 6 AWG is good to 55 amps so max is 44, 8AWG is good to 40 amps so go to 32 amps, 10 AWG is good to 30 amps so go to 24 amps and 12 AWG is 20 so go to 16.

For breaker if it is a 50 amp breaker limit the charge to 40 amps, if a 40 amp breaker limit to 32 amps, 30 amp breaker limit to 24 amps.

Make sure you park the vehicle in the garage, so if there's a fire, you can get an upgrade to Gen 2.

Real men don't use no stinkin breakers, it's direct to the main disconnect or go home ?
Main disconnect?.... I think it makes more financial sense to tap into a street light...?

Not sure what your definition of "super slow charging" is. This is level 2 charging. Use the Rivian mobile charger at 32 amps, and that's anything but "super slow".

16 miles of charge per hour.

I never set the amps different in my truck always in 48. I plug in and it works. As the guy below points out with all of the different breakers and wire sizes, it is important to make sure the breaker and wire size match up. Larger wire on a smaller breaker is fine. Smaller wire on a larger breaker is bad. Somehow the truck pulls what it can for power. I’ve hooked to 30 amp and 50 amp breakers with no issues and leave the truck set to 48. No tripped breakers and no hot wires.

If you are using an existing charger that is installed at a location it is probably set for the proper amps and will tell the vehicle what it can provide. It is safe to not charge the vehicle draw in those instances but if you are plugging a charger into an outlet without verifying the vehicle or charger is properly set for that location you could have an issue overheating that circuit.

If that particular plug is at least a 40 amp breaker and 8 awg wire and they are using the Rivian portable charger it will be plug and play as the Rivian charger maxes at 32 amps.

Breaker trips then you know something needs to change.
