I unfortunately hit an upper barrier while backing into a parking spot. The barrier was above the rear view camera, so I missed it completely.

I got an estimate to fix it from a Rivian Certified body shop. It came out to $4800.

They’ll be ordering a brand new tailgate from Rivian.

Just sharing a data point.

Sorry this happened to you. Is the tailgate still functional?

Sorry to see/hear that happened. One of my biggest fears. Its a pretty decent crease so I doubt PDR can fully save it but... its worth a shot. I can't decipher the paint damage from your pics but, some of those guys are true artist and can pull out some wicked damage. Unfortunately these vehicles are salty to repair with OEM parts right now...

You should get an estimate for PDR for that, assuming the tailgate works fine like this.

I would bet a good PDR could get that out. Wasnt there a couple REALLY good PDR guys in Cali?

I'd get a second opinion on that PDR..
There are bad ones.. There are good ones.. There are great ones.. There are friggin' unbelievable ones! I have no doubt there are some PDR folks who can work that out.

I agree with @rkalbiar . There are people here on the board that have had far, FAR, worse damage, and it was taken out by PDR.

Hello. I worked in automotive paint and refinish for most of my career. This is a great candidate for PDR to get it back to 95%. That crease will be tough but the access is good and heating it will not be a problem. Find a better PDR guy and tell them to give it their best shot, my guess is you’ll be able to live with it

I'd get the PDR and be fine with it not looking perfect. I'd then casually keep my eye out for a tailgate from a salvage that was in good shape and the same color. I did a quick ebay search and see several in various conditions for a few hundred dollars. I assume you could get a perfect one for about 1K.

That's all?

$5000 is almost the standard minimum for body damage. Understand repair process and it's immediately clear why it costs so much: time & labor.

To me, $4800 seems fair for a brand new piece with prep, paint, install.

BUT, I would 100% try PDR first. My experience with a rear quarter bash (R1T) was outstanding. First PDR guy said "no way, I can't fix that." Second PDR guy said, "Let me take a shot!" Guess what? It turned out spectacular. Like magic. Really.
