I'm not a fan of the card, and I don't trust myself with my phone as I'm always forgetting to charge it. Do they make key fobs for 2025 R1S that I can order or do they not make them at all?

Why do you have to be a fan of the card to carry one in your wallet as a backup option?

Carrying a keycard is as simple as carrying a drivers license. And keeping phone charged is as simple as making a habit of plugging it in or placing it on a charging stand/pad (if Qi compatible) nightly, just before going to bed. Buying a fob feels like the least logical solution. If it’s available, it cost you $, just as easily lost as any fob or card, also has a battery that can deplete and isn’t rechargeable. Sure you’re not wanting a fob simply because it’s the old familiar way, rather than the new and better way? With modern day software-heavy EVs, it’s almost mandatory to have two forms of keys on you; one as back up and for valet parking. And your phone is potentially your life link in case of emergencies—it’s just prudent to keep it in working condition. It’s time to graduate to the phone and keycard as backup. If you really want to spend $, it’s probably better spent converting a keycard to a ring (CNICK for example, https://rivianring.com/ ).

I bought an extra key fob for a 2023 R1S a few months ago, most likely you can do the same for a 2025.

You can’t call it an adventure vehicle an adventure vehicle if you need a charged phone to get in it. It’s even more annoying that the app depletes my phone battery quicker making the whole thing even less fool proof. Keys have worked for every other manufacturer for a long time and Rivian (and Tesla) have tried to reinvent the wheel with little to show for it besides more annoying functionality that seems to vary update to update. It’s not absurd to want a key fob.

Also while we’re on the subject, the keycards are stupid. Sure they work fine but I’m not checking into a hotel im trying to access my car. Why I have to swipe it across the door rather than keep it in my pocket and touch the handle (like every other manufacturer with reliable keys) is beyond me.

I love the cars but the key and access situation is stupid and unnecessarily so.

ok, I'll take the bait...

Maybe, but some jeep owners would say you can't call it an adventure vehicle if you have to open a door or wear a seatbelt to drive it

I'm not sure about the battery in the phone, but perhaps, maybe the phone is old? You don't have permissions set to let it send data so it keeps trying? Maybe just the app is faulty though. Rivian and Tesla aren't exactly breaking new ground here. Many would say that cut keys worked just fine until the manufacturers got cute with key fobs and push button start. It's not absurb to want a key fob like you said, which is why they allow you to purchase one instead of providing one to everyone by default and raising the price of the Rivian by that much more

Also while we’re on the subject, the keycards are stupid. Sure they work fine but I’m not checking into a hotel im trying to access my car. Why I have to swipe it across the door rather than keep it in my pocket and touch the handle (like every other manufacturer with reliable keys) is beyond me.
Why do you have to tap the card to the car and not have it work as you approach like every other car? Because every other car doesn't work like that with passive keycards. In order to have that range you need to have a battery in the fob and that doesn't work great with the key card. This key card is the same as every key card to get into every office building and hotel as you mentioned. It is meant as a backup, to your phone. We have reached the age where a smart phone really is a necessity in our everyday life, especially when it comes to modes of travel like it or not, BUT Rivian has gone above and beyond to make sure you have the option of a key card or fob.

Adventure Vehicle. There. I just called it an adventure vehicle. The statement about the adventure vehicle and phone charging is 1) a non sequitur, and 2) in complete disregard of the fact that there are two other ways to unlock the car. But still you kvetch.

Both other ways to unlock the car are inferior to industry standards. I didn’t realize critiquing the key situation would cause so many folks to get upset…

I’m so upset by this that I just joined another group therapy session. ? Seriously though, I have never had a single issue with either our R1T or R1S with either the key fobs or the cards, the latter of which don’t need to be used because the key fobs always work. Maybe if something always works in one’s experience with it there is no adventure in that?

My BMW has Phone As A key and it works great, different than Rivian which from man experience works great as well. I haven't used keys for either car since I picked them up 18 months ago. Why complain when you have a key? Want another one then buy one.

It may not be activated yet. Not sure. But 2025 R1 supports UWB phone key for iPhone and pixel models. This allows you to use the phone as a key even with a dead battery

That’s like saying why would you ever run out of gas or battery. I never leave home without my key FOB. Phones don’t stay charged, can be lost, stolen, dropped plus the phone connectivity sucks and is not dependable. I carry the card in my wallet. Also I don’t have my phone in me 100% of the time. Somebody wants a FOB, big deal. Leave them alone. I want a FOB as well.
