I have an early VIN as well. Was this the clicking sound you would hear? Mine started a few months ago. Only when I turn the wheel full left or right.

This is the sound I'm experiencing quite often. I submitted a service request for it a few months ago. My appointment is coming up next week.

I wonder if it is the subframe issue. I've done tire swaps before and looked under there quite extensively and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary (tie rods, suspension components, etc).

I guess we'll see!

Please let me know what they say. I requested an appointment at the SC but they switched it to a mobile appointment. My guess is they are probably going to try and apply grease to something.

When they swapped out the torque washers on the axles they said the axles were fine. Not sure what else it could be.

It’s definitely something with the steering because it only happens when I turn the wheel. Going backwards or forwards doesn’t cause the noise.

I had the ting (I think that's what they were called) washers replaced a few months prior, service didn't mention anything looked amiss. Though at that time my truck had the odd noises w/sharp turning of the steering wheel- I didn't know to mention it as I hadn't driven another Rivian so I thought it was (perhaps) normal for the vehicle. This time, I was given an R1S as a loaner and the difference was night and day so i asked them to look into the sounds- that's when they called and told me it was the subframe.

Just an update, they replaced my "gen 2" subframe w/another "gen 2" subframe and it still did not fix the "clicking" noise. It is still randomly heard. Hub bearings were changed out the previous service. What else would they change out now?

How about hubs and half shafts? Have those all been replaced?

Just hub bearings were replaced prior to the subframe being replaced. Nothing on the hubs or half shafts.

The sound you describe could be excessive tolerance in the spline interface at the hub/half shaft connection.

Here was the video on the click sound before I had the hub bearings changed out and it fixed it dramatically. ( (70) Checking if this click sound is normal with a turned steering wheel at slow speed | Rivian Forum - R1T R1S R2 R3 News, Specs, Models, RIVN Stock -- Rivianforums.com ) But now, an occasional click will be heard...just 1-2 clicks...not repetitive like the video.

I could be wrong but I think that is the spline play. The ting washers are supposed to fix that....but don't know for certain.

Well, just got another update today, they changed out the hub bearings AGAIN and the sound has substantially gone down but still there. They have their "engineering" team looking into it more now. They want to make sure it is to my expectations. I did relay your suggestion to them to see too.

I dropped my R1T off for service yesterday and was told that the noise from the front end was corriosion in the hub causing binding. The head technician said they have replaced subframes and it didnt correct issues that owners were reporting.

The tech did mention this to me prior to replacing my subframe and is a common occurance on ANY car not just Rivian (he was coming from BMW and said it affects BMWs too). But I don't know how true that is because the loaner I'm driving now doesn't have it and it's much older than my vehicle. They also applied lube and that didn't help.

So the final fix they did was replace the knuckle and control arms, basically all the components from the front suspension. They said the click sound is gone now. Lets hope so. Going to go pick up the vehicle.

I'm going in for a service appointment at the end of the month as my tocking sound and creaking from the front suspension have become embarrassingly loud... Richmond SC and Rivian customer support keep correcting to "ticking sound" when they reply to me ...I asked them to check my front subframe for cracks and the health status of the oil/lube in the motors, they are billing me $260 to perform that inspection....I told them I refuse to pay it and referred them to the numerous post on this forum regarding inspections and subframe replacements.
They will also be replacing the PTC with the new version. Richmond SC can't guarantee a R1 loaner...not happy about that as I use my R1T to commute long distance for work
