These announcements are worthless without details. Rivian could make a 600+ mile range vehicle now. Just double the battery size and boom done. You probably won’t want to buy that vehicle though. It’ll have worse performance due to the added weight. It’ll cost 40% more (rough estimate don’t get hung up on it). And Rivian definitely doesn’t want make vehicle because it’ll be a very low volume seller.One can dream, right?
Samsung has announced a new type of fast-charging long-range (600+ miles / 1000km) solid state battery that should go into production in 2027 and will first be featured on high-end vehicles. PCMag link.
Rivian: Please consider a path towards those batteries in the years to come.
Battery energy density is going up slightly with minor tweaks. But there is no major COST EFFECTIVE game changing battery on the near horizon. Solid state has been talked about for a decade or more and no one has brought a reasonable cost cell to market yet.
