Those are exactly what I am talking about. These lights are intended to warn other drivers that the vehicle which carries them is wider than normal. By putting them on vehicle which is not required to carry them you are essentially creating a false alarm that dilutes in a small way the safety effect of those lights on wide vehicles.
I'm not sure where you are from, but that is not the case in rural Florida. My Silverado 2500 has a row of 5 LED marker lights across its roof and are not a warning of it being anything. These lights were installed at the factory by Chevrolet.

This is a US federal requirement effective across the US per FMVSS 108. Your Silverado 2500 IS a wide vehicle and thus has these lights as required by law.

Coincidentally, the other day I saw an older 4runner with 3 amber lights close together in the middle of the small grill. These were the only lights on, so I guess supposedly daytime running lights? It was overcast, headlights weren't needed, still I didn't think it was a good look but to each their own, assuming it's legal. Rivian already has DRL anyways.

No, they are not required. They were an option when I ordered the truck.

While the grille lights may have been optional, the cab lights were not. They were and are required by law whether you choose to believe it or not.

Here is the relevant CFR. Table 2 contains the required lights info:

https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-49/subtitle-B/chapter-V/part-571/subpart-B/section-571.108

While it is the law that wide vehicles must have these lights, it is not illegal for narrower vehicles to have them. If you want to run them because you think they look cool then there is nothing stopping you.

Interesting. I’ve seen a bunch of 2500’s on the street and never noticed the lights on the top of the cab. Maybe I wasn’t looking for them. We have a bunch of trucks running around in Hawaii (4Runners, F150’s, etc.) with those Amber lights in their grills. Obviously just for looks. Like you said to each his own.

There is one exception, that being California. Cuz California likes to override Federal laws, it seems to be a thing for them. In California, they think that the center 3 lights could be confused with a police/governmental emergency vehicle light bar  and therefore California has banned them.

The entire past few years of the Silverado/Tahoe/Suburban/Sierra/Denali family is over 80" wide, but I see plenty (most?) of them on the east coast without the lights. Some people claim SRW (Single Rear Wheel) vehicles are exempt from the requirement....
