A couple of weeks ago, was driving home from Michigan, we normally stop at RAN in Maumee, OH. We dropped off my sons car at Tesla supercharger in Findlay, OH on the way up. Decided to not stop twice, R1S said 11 miles left upon arrival. That lowered to 4 miles left at arrival and about 1 miles off the exit received a warning message that vehicle was reducing power to conserve range. Never saw that before, and we were already in Conserve mode.

Curious to how close others have come to “zero”.

I got to 1 mile remaining once because I’m an idiot. Won’t let that happen again.

On one occasion I pulled into my garage with 0 miles left. Now very familiar with what the car can and can't do as far as range.

I have arrived with 40 miles of range left when I get home after a road trip.

I don't think I could skip a charger if my arrival range was less than 40 miles.

I try to keep that sort of buffer so I can make it to a charger safely with minimal anxiety.

"You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din". When I get below 50 mile range and the little range bar on the driver screen goes to yellow, I start sucking up some seat cushion. I am the same way with our Diesel truck. When the fuel gauge gets below a quarter, I go into range panic mode. It's the 4Q31 gene that I was born with.

Not in my R1T but the original Nissan leaf : 1 mile left with 12 miles to go…. that was at the top of the pass, so regened almost the entire way back.

I got down to both 2% and 0% on my maiden voyage home after buying my truck used from a dealership in Iowa. The 0% was a little sketchy and I actually pulled off and charged for a bit at a Ford dealership (they had no level 2 unfortunately) just to get the extra mile I needed to the DCFC in Sterling, Colorado. That was fun, but definitely learned the truck a bit on that trip!

On my first trip towing a camper, I got to 0% pulling into the EA station in Evergreen, Colorado. I stupidly did not realize how much of a climb it was to get there and believed the truck and ABRP I could make it (this was right before the towing update to the Rivian).

Unfortunately, as typical for EA, one station was down (though tech was there working on it) and the other 3 occupied. I parked to the side and unhitched the trailer to make charging easier, then parked the truck in a spot with good view of the chargers to wait for my turn. Took about 15 minutes for someone to finally leave, but when I went to move the truck it would power up, but not let me put it in gear! This is where the fun part began. ?

Long story long, I had to get Rivian to send a tow truck to move me about 30 feet to be able to charge. Hindsight being a lot of things, I at least learned how to force the parking brake off so I could have pushed the truck to the charger (with the help of the EA tech who was willing to push).

All was well after that and for the rest of the trip.

I have taken it down to probably 4% once. Many years of driving EVs I always always plan to have a 10% buffer just in case. If I am confident I will make it back home I will lower that to 5% but I try not to ever run it below 10% occasionally or 20% regularly.

OK, stupid question: How do you force the parking brake off?
not a stupid question as I didn’t know how to do it either!

it’s in the Service menu on the truck. Same place for changing a tire. It will allow you to release the brake for 15 minutes. Mostly used for loading on a flatbed.

My first electric car had 76 miles of range and my commute was 55 miles round trip. These stories are funny. Other than road trips, put me anywhere I normally am with 10 miles of range and I wouldn’t even break a sweat.

Lowest I got was around 35 miles of range left. I had to make a choice when I was 45 miles from home whether to stop and charge, or go for it. I think the Rivian was predicting around 40 miles of range left once I got home, so I went for it. But it was also a mild night, around 70-75 degrees out. Not sure I would've done that in the winter.

I have a similar risk tolerance for this. I just don't like getting down that far; it's stressful, so I see no point in adding stress to an already stressful activity.

The lowest I've been was arriving at work with 10 miles left. Fortunately this was when all of the charge point chargers Intel Ronler Acres were still in service, so I could charge to drive home. At 12 miles left I got the reduced performance warning.

When I drive from my house near Salem to my son's house north of Seattle, I can make it without stopping to charge, but in the winter it's pretty close. I think the lowest for that was 26 miles on arrival. Always start with 100%.
