R1S automatically goes into park while on brake hold

A service appointment has been set for this issue. I have hard reset at least 2x and screen reset at least 3x. No fix.

The issue I’ve been having since taking delivery of my Gen 2 R1S is that especially at stoplights, when the vehicle is on brake hold, the vehicle shifts into Park automatically. At first, I thought this was because of the seat sensor, not detecting me on the seat and I was able to reproduce this by lifting my butt off the seat, but lately, even without shifting around the seat, this would happen. I weigh between 130-135 lbs for reference.

It is very annoying and dangerous as I have to shift back to drive before the green light occurs.

Anyone else having this issue? If so, what solutions have you found?

Definitely sound like a faulty seat sensor or wire to me

Question: Are you doing something like looking over your shoulder, reaching into the back seat, or dancing wildly that might lift your butt off the seat? That will automatically put it in park.

I had a similar issue. Sitting at a red light R1S shifted into park mode. I plan to note the date/time for them so they can look at the logs.

Nope. Before I thought it was because I was reaching over to grab something. But now I could be sitting the same way and it will shift to park at red light. Really no rhyme or reason.

Yes it always happen la at red lights. And sometimes multiple times during the same stop. I’ve hit the vehicle diagnostic capture every time it happens. I don’t have an appointment until Nov 26 ?

You have to be a little more um, 'firm' with Rivian, this isn't a dashboard rattle, it's a safety issue. At a traffic light, the light changes to green, and you didn't notice it's in park not hold, you hit the gas and nothing happens... wham, rear-ended! They will move you up if you insist, in most cases, especially when it's safety related.

Yup I hear you. I called them back 2 days ago and they reached out to my service center. I’m waiting to see if they can get me in sooner.

Sounds like you need to eat something and get that weight up. My fat ass wouldn’t have such problems, the seat just cries for help.

Yes. It has happened to me several times sitting at the red light only. I did not move around or have any unusual movement when it shifted to park mode.

Update:

Yesterday on my way back from work I tried a few things:

1. While on brake hold and seat belt buckled, I lifted my butt and back off the seat. Essentially levitating off the seat. It did not shift into park no matter how long I was off the seat.
2. While in brake hold and seat belt unbuckled, I lifted myself off the seat and on 2-3 secs, the car shifted into park. This was consistently reproduced.

However, the car did shift into park 2x randomly red lights. My seating position or seat belt status did not change. Again, while parking into my garage, the car shifted into park.

Rivian sent me a message saying the got me a priority SC appointment…ON JANUARY 2 lmao. My original MOBILE service appointment was Nov 26.

Then,

3) Updated the software to 2024.39. Drove the car about 18 miles without the car shifting into park at any red light. We will see how the rest of the day goes.

I will say that is pretty funny on your priority apportionment being 2.5 months from now and 2 months after your previously scheduled appointment. While frustrating, you also have to enjoy the humor of stuff like that.

Thank you for clarifying your seatbelt use. In almost every case of errant switching to park, it’s because people don’t have their seatbelt on and lift their butt off the seat while reversing.

It does really sound like an intermittent defect in your seat or seatbelt sensor. Hopefully, they’ll get you a real priority appointment in the near future.
