Was your foot depressing the brake pedal when this occurred?

You wearing that seat belt? Be honest.....
Uh ya? I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t take time out of my day to post on a forum to ask folks for suggestions regarding a problem that can be solved with something as simple as putting my seat belt on lol.

I've had this too. In my case a passenger got out while in drive and I waited, with my seatbelt on, for them to move a car. After about a minute it went to park.

I think I’ve seen this behavior before where I was waiting for someone to get in the car and forgot I was in brake hold and then the car went into park. This might be normal behavior though.

With one pedal driving, I do not depress the brake pedal while vehicle is on brake hold. So when these issues happen, my foot is not depressing the brake pedals.

The reason that I asked is that SuEllyn is fully in tune with OPD, but when she is stopped at a red light, she feels the need to put her left foot on the brake pedal. She did have the R1T go into park on one occasion while stopped at a red light.

Question: Are you doing something like looking over your shoulder, reaching into the back seat, or dancing wildly that might lift your butt off the seat? That will automatically put it in park.
Thats exactly what happened to me few days ago. I had to go to the bathroom and I lifted myself up from the drivers seat when parking the car in the garage and when I stop to wait for the garage door to open the car went into park.

It's a safety feature in case you stepped out of the vehicle without putting it in Park, but those of us who learned to drive only with mirrors and/ or looking every time forget sometimes

Yup if you unbuckle and then get up off the seat and it’s on brake hold it will go into park. I believe this is normal behavior.

Update:

Yesterday on my way back from work I tried a few things:

  1. While on brake hold and seat belt buckled, I lifted my butt and back off the seat. Essentially levitating off the seat. It did not shift into park no matter how long I was off the seat.
  2. While in brake hold and seat belt unbuckled, I lifted myself off the seat and on 2-3 secs, the car shifted into park. This was consistently reproduced.
However, the car did shift into park 2x randomly red lights. My seating position or seat belt status did not change. Again, while parking into my garage, the car shifted into park.

Rivian sent me a message saying the got me a priority SC appointment…ON JANUARY 2 lmao. My original MOBILE service appointment was Nov 26.

Then,

3) Updated the software to 2024.39. Drove the car about 18 miles without the car shifting into park at any red light. We will see how the rest of the day goes.
Just FYI, I thought you were crazy. Mine has done this twice today. Butt was fully in seat and seat belt was on.

I too started experiencing this issue around April 1, 2025. Took the vehicle in for service and advisor mentioned if the driver lifts off of the seat or unbuckles the seatbelt, it will auto shift into park. But I have not shifted my weight and always drive w. the belt buckled. I weigh 140lbs. Vehicle did it again this morning while at a stoplight. Frustrating.

Just an update on this issue.

I have now had this issue looked at on 3 Different Service Center visits. I’ve had extensive test drives with the service advisors and technicians and all three times we are not able to reproduce the issue. The funny thing is that on the drive there and back, the issues were there. So basically what the technicians have told me is thatthe driver seat sensor is located on the posterior right quadrant of where the butt rests and so depending on the driver’s sitting position, pressure on that sensor may shift or be completely off thus triggering the auto park feature to prevent rollaways. In my own experimentation, I do notice that some seating positions trigger this issue a lot, but knowing that now I am more conscientious of where my butt is sitting and making sure that it’s putting pressure on that posterior right quadrant.
They offered to replace the sensor, declined at this time. However, I think if this continues to persist despite me being more conscientious of how I’m sitting, I may take their offer up on it. It is a very annoying problem, but I have learned to live with it and feel that fixing something that potentially is just a bug and not necessarily a hardware issue and then potentially causing more problems was not worth it.

The issue can also happen if the driver's door is opened so it could be a sensor there as well but seems like you'd get a door open indicator too. Crazy how easy this car bricks and stops driving.
