I have the quad and the dual non performance model. The lack of "instant" kick in the dual model is bugging me enough that I may consider upgrade to performance when it is available. In the meantime, I do put it on reduce stability to engage the rear whenever i remember. Not sure how safe it is though

The specific situation that prompted the question was merging onto a highway, it was a long curved ramp that was significantly uphill, the car was pretty loaded up with kids and their stuff and as I came alongside the highway I was on a collision course with a long semi-truck. I had the option to slow down and get behind the truck (only to then overtake it) or I had enough ramp left to get ahead. In my ICE Subaru I would have taken the first option but with the Rivian's power I assumed I could take the second option. I did make it without issue but not as comfortably as I had assumed I would.
I had a similar experience early in my ownership, but it was making it through a yellow light. I'd been driving in sport mode most of the time by myself, but I wasn't alone so I had let it stay in all purpose. A light turned yellow and I stabbed the throttle at 30 mph. The truck "wheezed" ahead with little urgency and I barely made it through the light. I then found that AP cuts power to the base truck levels and softens the throttle response. Not a good experience.

I believe the big difference is actually torque, with the performance having 829 lb/ft and the standard truck only having 610. The quad has 908 which is a much smaller bump than standard to performance.

are you guys flooring the accelerator pedal when you want to go faster? I noticed my Dual non performance Max r1s is not accelerating like my model Y LR when not flooring it. The R1's pedal goes really deeper than the MY. Flooring it makes the acceleration feel much faster.

What does the efficiency look like with AWD always on?
I'm intrigued to give it a try. But If it meant a significant efficiency drop esp. on highways then I guess I wouldn't use it so much for those kind of trips and so it would mean a trip into the menus to select prior to an overtaking.
11,000 miles in 6 months, 2.33 is my number.

Yes, flooring it in AP mode is very strange as it is a very slow ramp up of power - not instant as you'd expect in an EV. Sport mode is quick and responsive even if you don't floor it.

Just a thought for Rivian Devs if they ever read this :)

Maybe adding the "push-to-pass" button on DualMotor Performance, like long-pressing one of the steering-wheel buttons while accelerating, enables the "sport mode-like performance" for a short burst.

This is very doable... Software-Defined Vehicle, right?
Count me in on this.

PDM Max AT, Sport/lowest vs. All-Purpose, after ~45mph the acceleration is the same.
Thanks for this, great to see some data when perceptions seem to vary so much.

Basically shows that the Performance mode is an expensive gimmick that costs Rivian nothing and is a pain to use. That's my practical experience with it and most other nannied settings in the Rivian. It launches harder from a stand still but I tend to agree that at speed it doesn't feel faster than AP. It's still way quicker than our GX470 in AP. Last weekend was towing and had to pull out of a stopped lane. I started to punch it to match traffic speed and had to back off because the Rivian accelerated so fast it forgot it was towing 4000lbs.

Still, even our beater BMW has a top speed of 150 and the Audi is definitely higher than that so the Rivian isn't race competition IMO. Super quick for day to day driving though where most speeds are highway. In the twisties, it does well. Just look at Pike's where speeds even there are limited.
Money better spent on the pricey Max pack as I use that extra range a lot, it came that way from the shop. Maybe Sand mode is worth something...

I would love to see AP on performance dual vs AP on Standard Dual... Curious to know if they really are the same when not in sport mode

I wonder if Rivian did what Tesla did when they offered acceleration boost for the 3 long range and Y long range. It knocked about a half second off my 0-60 times for both my 3 & Y. Above that vs. the stock trim, almost no difference. Maybe that is the same thing they did with the PDM...

This was my concern about going with a PDM vs the QM. Driving them back to back, the QM definitely felt quicker above 60.

So an earnest question from someone who left PDM on the table because of the 2024 incentives, does the performance boost do...anything at all outside sport/low/lowest?

From what I gather the answer is no, and that's not exactly going to spur many of us to spend $5k for it as an after the fact upgrade. I tend to avoid low as it is because of ride quality.
