My factory tonneau cover (vin 10xxx) lasted 18 months. 3 weeks to fix, plus a few other odds and ends. The brand new redesigned one just grenaded today. Less than 2 months old.

As a caveat i am a rivian fan boy; but i swear their design team has either never been in a region of the US where there was snow and /or never bothered to hired someone from new england. Because i swear, their design choices had ZERO thought around snow and ice.

Just a few examples:

- previously mentioned tonneau cover,

- the windshield wiper chicklet,

- the tunnel button location

- the tunnel ability to be opened with gloves or mittens

- the inability to melt snow off the hood

- the inability to melt snow off the headlights

- the exterior buttons for the tailgate/tonneau cover.

- the icing of the door pulls

- the icing of the fold in mirrors…

ok, i think Im done venting. I guess im trying to process how they’re working on their 2nd version (maybe 3rd somewhere) of the r1t, theyre up to the r3 model, IT DROVE FROM THE SOUTHERN TIP OF SOUTH AMERICA, and it still had these BS problems…….ok. Now im done venting.

Sorry to hear it. How did the tonneau version 2.0 fail in your case? Jammed at an angle? Were conditions ICY or any other contributing factors.

I have had the 2.0 PTC for over 6 months and no issues yet. Fingers crossed. We are in Colorado so plenty of snow but not a lot of ice.

jammed. With no obvious signs of ice on it. But, in nh/me we have a lot of freezing conditions right now. Bitterly cold. It bogged one way. I backed it up, tried going forward again, then reverse and then boom.

Im not sure if i should mad at myself, rivian, weather??? I feel like, you make a product, test the crap out of it and then release it. I feel this should of been easy. Park it in fort kent and and open and close it for for the 6 months of winter. Then go to el paso tx and do the same thing. Put some sand it. Put some ice in it. Boom! You test it. Its like these people were yeah we made a vehicle for one environment, in this one situation but its rad and can do cool shit. On paper.

Love this truck. Im a a fan boy. Rivian forever, yada yada… But RJ’s upbringing in FL is totally feeding my hate for of Florida. (Ive had a long week)

Sorry to hear about your issues. Was at first disappointed I could not get the automatic cover for my build. Got the manual version later on. But its simplicity has grown on me. I can remove it in 30 sec and reinstall it in about the same time.
About to head to the Alps with mine and would not want a finicky automatic one with all the snow and ice and bitter cold temps in the mountains.

Is this the first report of PTC 2.0 failing? I can’t recall anyone who had the full redesign (not the intermediate fix) posting a failure. If so, Rivian should do a failure analysis to figure out what happened.

I was thinking the same thing this past storm it's pretty clear their designers never lived in a cold climate nor tested it extreme cold conditions outside a lab.

To add to your list
Wipers that don't have a heated landing zone
Wipers that can't be propped up without putting it in servicing mode.
The under cowl place where the wipers reside just fills up with snow.
No ability to turn off regen in icy conditions
That hole in the fender that redirects salt, snow and mud right onto the paint work.

Sadly, even being in TX, some of these things have impacted me this winter. We hit 70 today so I don't think I'll have to deal with it anymore this year, but these are some pretty massive oversights.

“real?” ? Italy’s are nice. Spent some time in Austria’s last year. Heading to the TMB next year. You all (greater europe) have some great outdoors spaces. I may need to move there soon. I

RJ must have lived in New York and Massachusetts for quite a few years, since that is where he did all his college and grad school work.
