Is this the first report of PTC 2.0 failing? I can’t recall anyone who had the full redesign (not the intermediate fix) posting a failure. If so, Rivian should do a failure analysis to figure out what happened.
No, my 2.0 design just failed about a week ago. My R1T is not yet two years old. It came with a non-functional PTC. It was over a year before they installed the upgraded PTC. Now, after ten months or so, it has failed. They can't get me in to the SC until April, so I'll be crawling into the bed and/or dragging stuff out with a hook until then.

Sorry to hear it. How did the tonneau version 2.0 fail in your case? Jammed at an angle? Were conditions ICY or any other contributing factors.
No ice or snow. In fact I don't think that there has ever been any snow on it. Dust, yes (southern Arizona).
It bound up with slats at an angle, and partially separating. I tried going forward and reverse, hoping it would overcome whatever the resistance was, but eventually it failed completely.

Was REALLY bummed when the PTC was pulled from my (what turned out to be 2024) order against my will. The Interrobang manual cover has worked great and standing on it (150 lbs) is no issue. But in my very tight garage with the door closed (so no room to drop the tailgate) it still sucks to not be able to place/remove something in the truck bed.

Yeah, I was unhappy when they pulled the PTC from my order. But then I found one in the Rivian shop that had a working PTC. But it had failed before I could pick it up. I wish I had bought an Interrobang tonneau, instead. What I really want is a topper. Finally there are options for toppers. But after spending $1600 for the PTC, and however many hundreds spent on a homemade tonneau, paying even more for a topper will be rough.

I have a simple solution for all your cold weather Rivian troubles. It will fix every example you've listed. It's so simple. Very simple. You just have to move to California but only the parts near the coast. Like Irvine where the R1T was designed or near me in Sacramento. You will never have to worry about your headlights or door handles freezing up because it never gets below freezing. Then only drive to Tahoe when it's not snowing. PROBLEM SOLVED. You're welcome.

I see your logic. We are legit looking at flagstaff, but my retirement is about 5-6 years off.

58k miles here at almost 3 years, gone through rain, snow, ice, mud, heat, pine needles, etc. No issues ??‍♂
I'm at 40k miles and 2.5 years and I was feeling lucky too until my cover gave out last week :/ Scheduled to get it fixed in 4 weeks.

Count yourself lucky. Looks like I can expect to have mine repaired once a year until the warranty runs out. By the time I get to 60,000 miles, I'll probably (still) have spent more time without a working tonneau than with one that works. Then, I guess, I'll turn it into a manual tonneau, or pull it off in favor of something else.

Ooof - that is rough man I'm sorry. It's one of the coolest parts of the truck, I really hope they can figure out a design that works. I think they need to lean into something that is easier for the customer to clean out any jams themselves without needing it to be serviced because of leaves/debris/etc.

I haven't really had any issue with leaves/debris/pine needles - but dust or grit, etc. can be an issue here. I really don't like the idea of using spray lubricants there, which can get onto the painted surfaces or the top of the tonneau. But I am going to look for a brush on dry lubricant. IEC used to supply a brush on dry lubricant (in a carrier that dried quickly) to lubricate trunnions on centrifuges.
I saw a video, a couple of years ago, where someone disassembled and fixed (unjammed) their tonneau cover. Huge amount of work. If only Rivian had (at least) designed this so that it could be easily and quickly serviced (without special tools).
Ultimately I may just spring for a topper/camper shell, now that there are options available.

Sorry to hear about your issues. Was at first disappointed I could not get the automatic cover for my build. Got the manual version later on. But its simplicity has grown on me. I can remove it in 30 sec and reinstall it in about the same time.
About to head to the Alps with mine and would not want a finicky automatic one with all the snow and ice and bitter cold temps in the mountains.
Hi Fxstein, nice to meet a fellow Rivian owner in Europe! I've driven my 2022 R1T through the Alps plenty (summer and winter) and loved it. What manual tonneau cover did you get and would you recommend it? My powered tonneau cover just broke and I'm not sure whether to try and fix it or get a manual one. Thanks!

Nice to meet you too!
I got the one Rivian sells in the gear shop. Comes with a bag and fits inside the gear tunnel (as a 2nd floor) when not in use.

Mine failed after the updated design. My original failed 2 days after I got the truck (used) in February 2023 back when they gave up on the temp fix. So I drove over a year with it disabled.

I got the updated one in March 2024 and it failed after a few weeks. Just some dirt on it I think no snow or ice. SC replaced it again and said the whole unit had to be replaced and was the first one they saw of the new design fail. I’m not too confident in this design either but since they did the second replacement it’s been good. I honestly don’t open it that often.
