Opal is our beloved 2023 R1T. We have had her for right at 2 years, and she has been overall an excellent truck. We have really taken to the EV lifestyle and have enjoyed her immensely.

The only chronic issue that we have had with her is her fickle tailgate. For the first year and a half there were no problems. Then she started having trouble with recognizing whether or not her tailgate was closed. At first we noticed that the tailgate showed open on the driver screen even though it was closed. I would reopen and close the tailgate, and the issue would be corrected. As time went on, this happened more and more often. Then it would not correct itself and continued to show open. I put in a service ticket and got mobile service to come out. The technician replace both of Opal's tailgate lock mechanisms. The system worked properly for about a week and then went back to its old routine. I have done several hard resets to no avail. Then, all of a sudden, the tailgate will show closed for no apparent reason. The next time I open the tailgate, it will again show open after closing.

I am guessing that there must be some defective sensor somewhere that is causing this issue. Does anyone in the group have any idea where this sensor may be so that I can try to correct this situation?

Can't help with your situation, but maybe stacking will make this thread more visible. Only if my 'issue' is in fact an issue.

I also have a 23, just got it days ago, and the tail gate won't open from the truck or phone UI - when I go to the tail gate I can hear a noise, but the gate is still closed, It will only open from the rubber button on the bed side. And when I manually close it, there's a noticeable clunk, something like a small bolt just dropped.

I created a ticket yesterday, hopefully support contacts me this week.

Brian,

I fought the tailgate issue for the last 2 years, and I think I finally won.

They were only replacing one side latch over and over, after the 3rd failed replacement at mobile service they finally brought it in to the SC, replaced both latches, and adjusted the tailgate. I believe it's a combination of bad latches and misaligned tailgate resulting in not-quite-closed and stressed latches.

Keep hounding them, push for a SC diagnosis and tailgate realignment.

We had the tailgate issue back in December. The mobile guy (God Bless him....Kevin) came out on Jan. 3rd with pouring rain and replaced the sensor. He said that it is a known issue. Our R1T (aka "Lapis") will be celebrating her 2nd birthday on May 3rd. Other than the tailgate and the 12v battery issue, she has been a great addition to the family.

I will say that a month after we got her, she got really sick and gave us a "headlight system" issue which meant we couldn't drive her at night. She went to the service center (West Sacramento) for almost 3 weeks. They called in techs, advanced techs and then finally flew in one of the tech from Normal and only after using a orthroscopic type camera and running it through the cable runs did they find the issue......a connector was shorting out.

Other than those few things, nothing major and we love her!

Our Dear Opal is about the same age. We took Factory Delivery in Normal on April 26, 2023. Opal has been been very good to us. The only issues have been the replacement of her 12 volt battery in August of last year, and this chronic tailgate issue. Mobile Service replaced both of her tailgate latches a month ago. This should have solved the problem, but it has not. I can't imagine there is a sensor outside of the latch mechanisms. Hopefully, they will get this figured out. Rivian has given me a Service Center appointment. I would rather not have to go to a Service Center as the closest one to me is in Atlanta which is a five hour (300 mile) drive from here. Rivian really needs to make service more accessible if they want to continue as a viable auto maker.

I agree....they need more service centers or they need to invest in trade school training and promote EV repair shops and not just Rivian SC.....make them "Rivian Certified Repair Centers" (RCRC for short...LOL).

If they give you a laonerR1T, it wouldn't be to bad. When they had Lapid for 3 weeks, they gave us a loaner R1T (white) to use. We told them "we don't want Lapis back until she is well"
