Hello all!
First time poster here, wanted to share a situation that happened to me last week during a road trip in the Southwest. I'm an owner of a Gen2 R1T DP.
We left Las Vegas area fully loaded with camping, climbing, and mountain biking gear. Two mountain bikes on a trailer hitch rack. Trip was going great for first 4 days, business as usual touring around the St. George and Zion NP areas. We then proceeded to head further North up I-15, which required us to stop in Cedar City UT for a charge. We were thrilled to see a Tesla supercharger in Cedar City on the Rivian nav computer, as the Tesla chargers are usually pretty well performing. When we arrived at the charger, there were the typical red signs posted for "Tesla Vehicle Charging Only". We figured perhaps this station was recently opened to other vehicles (since it showed up in the Rivian nav) and they just hadn't removed the signs yet. So we plugged in the truck with the appropriate adapter (I think? I have one Tesla adapter for lower voltage wall chargers and another for Superchargers.)
After waiting approximately 5 mins for a connection, it didn't seem to want to go. So we unplugged, figured it was an error in the Rivian nav computer, and decided to proceed to the EA supercharger just a few more minutes up the road, also in Cedar City. There were people already charging here, so we waited approximately 5 minutes for a spot to open, then pulled up and plugged in the truck. Again, we could not get a charging connection. The EA screen would read "Payment accepted", and "initiating charge", and you could here the electrical switches at the station flipping to start charging, however the truck would immediately say "disconnect and try again", and the EA station would read "reconnecting to vehicle" before ultimately timing out and giving up. This occurred over and over for a matter of hours at different charging plugs of the EA station and troubleshooting with EA on the phone to reset the computers and what-not. All the while, other EVs were pulling up and using the chargers no problem. So, this led us to believe the issue was with the truck and not the EA charger. We tried soft and hard resets a few times here, still didn't work.
So eventually, we decided to try a lower voltage charger, also in Cedar City. A local hotel had a few Tesla wall chargers that we pulled up to. We plugged in (again with the appropriate adapter), but immediately got the notification on the truck dashboard "waiting for charger". We waited for approximately 10 mins, but the charger wouldn't start. There were again multiple chargers for us to try with, but got the same result with all of them. Also, other cars were using the chargers, which again indicated the issue was with the truck and not the chargers.
We called Rivian support, walked through another hour of troubleshooting on the phone which involved more soft and hard resets of the vehicle. We tried letting the vehicle go completely to sleep for a few hours, but it still had the same results at all the chargers. We stayed the night in town, let the vehicle sleep for a longer duration, then tried all the chargers again in the morning. Same results, vehicle could not connect to the chargers. Not knowing what else to do, we worked with Rivian to get the truck towed back to the Las Vegas SC. We only had 20% battery and weren't comfortable trying to proceed to another town/charger (next nearest was about 60 miles away).
Here's the real kicker. Vehicle arrived at the service center that evening, and Rivian says they plugged in and it started charging with no issues! I couldn't believe it! They say they are going to look through the data logs to try and figure out what happened, but they are still working on it.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Or have any other recommendations for troubleshooting? I'm hoping Rivian finds the glitch. I suspect maybe the incompatible Tesla supercharger may have thrown the computer for a loop, and maybe a Rivian brand charger was able to help reset it? But can't say for sure.
