Hello all!

First time poster here, wanted to share a situation that happened to me last week during a road trip in the Southwest. I'm an owner of a Gen2 R1T DP.

We left Las Vegas area fully loaded with camping, climbing, and mountain biking gear. Two mountain bikes on a trailer hitch rack. Trip was going great for first 4 days, business as usual touring around the St. George and Zion NP areas. We then proceeded to head further North up I-15, which required us to stop in Cedar City UT for a charge. We were thrilled to see a Tesla supercharger in Cedar City on the Rivian nav computer, as the Tesla chargers are usually pretty well performing. When we arrived at the charger, there were the typical red signs posted for "Tesla Vehicle Charging Only". We figured perhaps this station was recently opened to other vehicles (since it showed up in the Rivian nav) and they just hadn't removed the signs yet. So we plugged in the truck with the appropriate adapter (I think? I have one Tesla adapter for lower voltage wall chargers and another for Superchargers.)

After waiting approximately 5 mins for a connection, it didn't seem to want to go. So we unplugged, figured it was an error in the Rivian nav computer, and decided to proceed to the EA supercharger just a few more minutes up the road, also in Cedar City. There were people already charging here, so we waited approximately 5 minutes for a spot to open, then pulled up and plugged in the truck. Again, we could not get a charging connection. The EA screen would read "Payment accepted", and "initiating charge", and you could here the electrical switches at the station flipping to start charging, however the truck would immediately say "disconnect and try again", and the EA station would read "reconnecting to vehicle" before ultimately timing out and giving up. This occurred over and over for a matter of hours at different charging plugs of the EA station and troubleshooting with EA on the phone to reset the computers and what-not. All the while, other EVs were pulling up and using the chargers no problem. So, this led us to believe the issue was with the truck and not the EA charger. We tried soft and hard resets a few times here, still didn't work.

So eventually, we decided to try a lower voltage charger, also in Cedar City. A local hotel had a few Tesla wall chargers that we pulled up to. We plugged in (again with the appropriate adapter), but immediately got the notification on the truck dashboard "waiting for charger". We waited for approximately 10 mins, but the charger wouldn't start. There were again multiple chargers for us to try with, but got the same result with all of them. Also, other cars were using the chargers, which again indicated the issue was with the truck and not the chargers.

We called Rivian support, walked through another hour of troubleshooting on the phone which involved more soft and hard resets of the vehicle. We tried letting the vehicle go completely to sleep for a few hours, but it still had the same results at all the chargers. We stayed the night in town, let the vehicle sleep for a longer duration, then tried all the chargers again in the morning. Same results, vehicle could not connect to the chargers. Not knowing what else to do, we worked with Rivian to get the truck towed back to the Las Vegas SC. We only had 20% battery and weren't comfortable trying to proceed to another town/charger (next nearest was about 60 miles away).

Here's the real kicker. Vehicle arrived at the service center that evening, and Rivian says they plugged in and it started charging with no issues! I couldn't believe it! They say they are going to look through the data logs to try and figure out what happened, but they are still working on it.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Or have any other recommendations for troubleshooting? I'm hoping Rivian finds the glitch. I suspect maybe the incompatible Tesla supercharger may have thrown the computer for a loop, and maybe a Rivian brand charger was able to help reset it? But can't say for sure.

Thanks for any feedback!

Thanks for sharing. Use apps like plug share. Also, here is a video telling you how to find compatible Tesla chargers. All NACS Tesla chargers are 250 kW +. V2 (150 kW) and urban superchargers (72 kW) are all Tesla only.

Sounds like an adapter problem. Where did you get your J1772 to NACS adapter from?

Hello, thanks for sharing the info.

Yes, I'm familiar with Plugshare and similar apps. I'd like to add that I've had the truck for about 6 months now and I've never had charging/adapter issues like this before. I've charged many times at various brands of chargers, including Tesla.

I had this issue in Zion. For the first few days was charging fine at Tesla destination chargers and then I couldn’t charge at any level 2 chargers. I COULD charge using the Rivian portable charger. Did you try that? After a couple days everything worked again and I was able to charge normally. Rivian couldn’t find any issues. I would make sure youre able to charge using Nonrivian chargers before you get the truck back.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I got the adapter from Rivian actually...
Rivian sells NACS to CCS-1 adapters, but I don't see NACS to J1772 adapters in the Gear Shop.

I'm not aware that Rivian sells this item.

Best wishes!

For Tesla Superchargers that are compatible, I used the Tesla app to make sure it was accurate. I figured Tesla would have the best up to date information on which of their chargers are compatible with non-Tesla's. Our trip from CA to AZ went well doing this. Our first stop, I just did the Rivian nav and it took us to an EA charge site that had 2 of 3 working and a long line of cars waiting. I decided to stop even trying anything but Tesla and the rest of the trip went super easy.

BTW, this is how I always have done road trips, whether in our Tesla or another EV. I always book only hotels that have EV charging available. That way I can plan our route to have very little charge left when we arrive and just plug it in at night and be full in the mornings. In my experience, this has worked well to reduce greatly the time spent at any charging stations.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing!

Regarding the portable charger, I was wondering if this would work, but I didn't have it with me unfortunately. Will certainly make sure i have it stored in the truck for future trips...

Will also definitely have Rivian check that it can charge on non-Rivian platforms before I get it back.

Thanks again for the info. Somewhat relieved to hear I'm not the only one this has happened to.

It’s pretty frustrating I was never given an answer as to why this happened. I’ve also had an issue with the Barstow RAN but they can’t figure that out either.

Rivian is probably plugging it in to Level 2. There may be an issue with the truck DC fast charging. Sometimes if there is a hardware issue you will be able to level 2 charge but when you try to use dc fast charger you will not be able to.

Im assuming Rivian ruled out any issue with your billing. With Rivian I believe the driver display will actually tell you if its billing related..

The Tesla chargers you used where they don’t do anything and just spin is usually because it’s not a charger open to NACS vehicles.

It could be an adapter issue, but that wouldn’t explain the failure to charge at EA.

I haven’t tried the Tesla or EA sites in Cedar City but I have charged successfully at the Mesquite Tesla site as well as the Walmart EA site just north of St George while out in that area. Hope your trip wasn’t completely ruined and you can get back out there while the weather is still good.

We have had our R1s dual standard for two months brand new. Have only charge at home on Rivian wall charger. Three days ago left for first family road trip and first charging stop was a nightmare. Unplug and try again error on Tesla super chargers and RAN fast charger. Had to get it towed to East vale location and we got a rental to make our trip up to Big Bear. Just heard from technician that high voltage distribution box needs to be replaced and some connectors on a harness were burned. Have you had any issues since your R1T was fixed? Hoping it’s a rare issue.

Sorry to hear that you had similar experience. Very frustrating. Technicians didn't find any electrical damage from our issue, it seemed to be more of a software glitch.

Fortunately, I've had no issues since this incident and have been loving the truck.

However, we ran an experiment by trying to charge at that same Electrify America charger in Cedar City that gave us problems a while back. That particular charging station refuses to work with my truck for some reason... I've never encountered this issue at any other super chargers. Just something to consider.

Hope you get you truck fixed up soon!
