From what I can tell,
Rivian "Multi-Factor Drive":
1. Enter vehicle
2. Press brake pedal
3. Notification appears on display-> Approve drive to get going
4. Pull out your phone
5. Unlock your phone
6. Launch Rivian app
7. Authenticate from Rivian app--> Yes, let's go.
7a. Or authenticate if you happen to have an extra piece or hardware: smartwatch
8. Or enter time-based passcode displayed on your smartphone also
9. Put phone down
10. Shift to D, off you go.

From THE GREAT, CLEAR industry leader:
1. Enter vehicle
2. Press brake pedal
3. Enter PIN on keypad that appears on vehicle display
4. Shift to D, off you go. No phone, no other hardware, nothing else needed. Done. Gone.

Rivian driver still fiddling with watch, or phone, Rivian app, etc.

'Nuff said.

Security and convenience are a tradeoff, not a toggle.

My 5 years experience with Tesla suggests precisely that Tesla managed to do both masterfully.

I like my R1S a heckuva lot. I just sometimes wonder WTH? with how Rivian does, or not, some things!!!

For Tesla, Rivian and others, so far all is good.

I’m not saying I love it but I bet the minute someone’s Tesla or Rivian gets compromised, everyone will scream about how relaxed their security is.

Bottom line, this is a welcome Rivian update. Do you know if it will make it to Gen 1s?

Yes, it’s one of the better updates. I thought someone mentioned that it started rolling out already. Usually when it does, you’ll see the “installing now” or “downloading” threads so I don’t think it’s really hit the masses yet. I’m guessing it will start rolling out to the masses tomorrow through Saturday. I received an email from Rivian today about the update.

Then don't use it. Do you have personal experience with the MFD? If not then maybe wait until you try it before you bash it.

Did you not see what I listed in my comment?
Should there be something you cannot grasp, well, perhaps read again.

yes I did see it. Is that what you had to do to drive? Have you tested it out on your Rivian? Just trying to say that try it out before bashing it.

I'm super bummed that Rivian still does not have PIN to drive.

So what happens with PIN to drive in Teslas if you want to park your car with a valet? You give the valet the PIN? (i.e. tell them your password?) Which they then write down on your tag and hang it up with your keys where anyone can see it? Or do you just disable the PIN and let the valet leave it in the garage unlocked to get stolen, defeating the purpose of having a PIN in the first place?

Seems like MFA is a more secure framework, and generally applicable to more use cases. Think how trivial it would be to allow time-based access, or limited time access, etc. with this feature. An Amazon driver for example could securely check out a delivery van for the day. It could be used by rental car companies to prevent the vehicle from being driven without a valid contract, or by a ride share company wanting to drop off a car for later pickup - it can even be integrated with gear guard video for further authentication. Or integrated with other tokens, like an electronic employee ID badge or a 1-wire secure button like they use in a lot of places (e.g. Rivian service centers). If Rivian decides they *want* to add a PIN to drive feature, that can trivially be built on top of the MFA framework. Until then, you're comparing apples and oranges.

Regardless, the framework is the key here. Rivian can and will tweak the User Interface in future updates, perhaps to use a phone notification which you can click on without opening the app, for example.

But bottom line is, if you don't like it, don't use it. Remember, this is a FREE NEW FEATURE that didn't come with the car you bought, and there was no promise that anything of this sort would EVER be given to you. My previous vehicle NEVER got EVEN ONE new feature the entire time I owned it. So thank you Rivian, even if I don't use MFA, I do appreciate your continued work toward making my vehicle even better.

Nice job, Jose. I was prompted to watch your video on YouTube because my algorithm knows that I like to view Rivian videos, and I appreciated what you had to say. I'm driving a (late December) 2023 R1T with 36,000 miles.
