In summary: Incremental improvement. Maybe 1 minute faster for on boarding 60 kWh of energy.

Longer Story:

I've had a Gen 1 Large Pack and now a Gen 2 Max Pack R1T. I've recorded all my Electrify America charging sessions over the last 3 years and the data is summaries below. The different lines are for different levels of initial state of charge of the battery. I try to do my charging sessions starting between 10% and 20% state of charge.

I have one charging session with the latest update which the release notes say have improved fast charging performance. This session was done starting at 20% state of charge with a fully preconditioned battery. I've always seen good charging with the Gen 2 Max pack and this session was similar. About 1 minute faster to onboard 60 kWh of energy. 20 minutes vs ~21 historically. (see grey circle in plot below). Not nothing and I'll take it but not that noteworthy either.

In this session it held at over 200 kW from 20% to about 55% state of charge. Stayed over 175 until about 60% SOC.

Well, there are other comparisons on Reddit if you search for something like "2025.18 Gen2 Max Pack DC Charging improvements." that include pre-update and post-update curves.

I'd link to it but RF is scrubbing the reddit link.

Interesting. Did you do anything to expose the energy app tab? I can't figure out how to get to it on my T.

Another question: could it be that the biggest improvement area is above 64%, where you stopped the charging session? I always thought the 50-80% charge speed was something they could improve, but below that was pretty much maxed out.

Yes, that is possible. Will continue to gather data and update periodically.

At bottom of UI hit the lightning bolt tap, that screen has been completely redesigned. Then, Top left corner of screen there is a "Charging" and a "Energy Monitor" menu option.

Charging curves are one way to quantify charging performance. For me, I like energy added in a given amount of time. That's what's really important. Charging curves don't really capture that for me.

There is no lightning bolt on my screen. I rebooted the car, and rebooted the UI. I think I'm going to try rebooting UI again. Although I doubt that will work.

Slide up from the bottom of the main screen UI to expose the hidden options… THEN look for the ‘lightning bolt’.

The biggest issue pre update for Max Pack, was it would thermal de-rate too quickly, specifically on deep, high current charges, or back to back DCFC stints. The improvement I think was shown to be 3-6 minutes overall, which isn't insignificant, especially in those repeated charging road trip instances.

Also, in the Outofspec video from the Rivian California office, they showed the Max Pack charging at nearly 50kW mid 90% which is fantastic and opens the vehicle up a bit more for consumers trying to eek out the full capacity of the battery.

I thought the benefit was not an increase in the instantaneous charge rate but keeping the higher portion of the charge rate higher for a longer duration?

so a true comparison would need to relative to the initial SoC.

It is both. It allows a higher max charge rate and also changes the curve to allow higher speeds for longer throughout the charge.

Max Pack (Gen 1 & Gen 2)
  • Peak charging speed increased slightly from 206 kW to 215 kW.
  • 10–80% charge time is down from 41.5 minutes to 38 minutes.
  • In just 15 minutes on a fast charger, you’ll now gain 135 miles, up from 129.
Large Pack (Gen 2 only)
  • This one got the biggest bump, peak charging speed jumped from 162 kW to 215 kW.
  • The 10–80% session dropped from 41.5 minutes to just 35.5 minutes.
  • And your 15-minute top-up? Now 137 miles, up from 109.
Standard Pack (Gen 2 only)
  • While the 215 kW peak stayed the same, Rivian still squeezed out more efficiency.
  • Charging from 10–80% is down to 27 minutes from 30.
  • You’ll now see 132 miles added in 15 minutes, up slightly from 129.

I've seen two videos now which have shown better results than those posted by riviantracker.

Can't wait to see more real world numbers.

I tried to test myself but ran into charging station issues before giving up. I'll try again at some point for fun.
