I've been there with the "forgetting about something in the trunk" back in college involving my 2004 Dodge Neon & a gallon jug of salsa.

One week was more than enough time for that stuff to forever saturate into the trunk liner fabric. Wonder if the dealership that I traded it into ever got the smell out - or if they just junked the car.

An ozone machine can do wondrous things with the worst of odors. Learned that from my Turo hosting days.

I think this is one of those things that if you tried fixing it yourself you could have just cleaned out the connectors, but the service center wouldn't want to take on that liability / risk.

This is a great opportunity for TuxMat to create a subtrunk mat that works for R1S cars with and without a spare tire.

No, it was a dog vomit or a drunk spouse.
I hundred percent don’t know exactly sure because I put a lot of things in the trunk of my car. I have a WeatherTech mat that gets washed regularly. I was transporting about six months ago some old liquids that were in my garage. Taking them to the dumps. They could’ve been an organic liquid fertilizer. But there wasn’t really much to clean up inside my car, especially on the WeatherTech mat. It just was dry. Nothing smelt or was corroding.. but the bottom line and back to the point an accident occurred in caused damage to the wiring regardless of what the substance was, I would think a comprehensive claim to the insurance company would be enough. I have had weather damage insurance claims in the past decades, bear damage to a Past vehicle, taking a hose and washing down the windshield of a car because of all the pollen, and instantly the windshield broke and all have been covered under insurance. Why would this be any different?
This seems 100% owner error, not the fault of Rivian or an act of god. Sorry this happened but I would imagine insurance won't help and neither would Rivian.

Something spilled in the trunk area of my R1 S. I have a WeatherTech mat, but the Unknown liquid leaked down underneath the tire well . It followed the wire harness and leaked into the connectors . All the connectors within the wire harness system are not sealed . To replace the whole wire harness system the estimate is $8000. Rivian’s warranty will not cover the repair work nor will my GEICO insurance under the comprehensive policy. I am quite frustrated with Rivian. To create an outdoor adventure vehicle and have the whole system disabled because of some “spilt milk” in the trunk sounds unacceptable. Why wouldn’t the connectors for the wiring system be sealed? I feel like I should be covered under the warranty or my insurance company should cover me. Disappointed that this has happened and no longer trust the vehicle.
Oh Man! So sorry Kerri!
Do you have the Gen 1 or 2?

I’ve had many things spill in a vehicle over the decades and never had a car shut completely Down . Anything from coffee to ice chest leaking , kids sippy cups to name a few . Still not 100% but there was a small amount of organic liquid fertilizer in the trunk area that leaked onto the water proof mat about 6 months earlier , never saw any evidence it went anywhere else .
You may need to look into how you transport things if spilling all sorts of random liquids in your car is such a regular occurrence that you cannot even name what caused the damage. When I transport liquids, I do so in enclosed containers. The whole "I don't know what happened" thing sounds like bullshit to me. It wasn't a couple of ounces of soda or water that caused this damage; to torch a wiring harness, you'd need a significant amount of liquid, and if Rivian pulled this whole thing apart and found stickiness, it was more than just a little bit of something.

Are you filling 5-gallon buckets full of chemicals, then taking the rally course to your local disposal facility? I don't believe you when you say a small amount, as you cannot even identify WHAT spilled, let alone how much.

Why would Rivian put sealed connectors INSIDE the vehicle? You aren't supposed to get the inside wet; that's why it has a roof, windows, and doors.

Maybe an R1T is the solution. The truck bed is tolerant to "liquid spills".

Referencing other vehicles, Lexus was notorios for installing their navigation/central locking system/amplifier in the trunk of the LS models. It was placed beneath the trunk compartment within/beside the spare tire. None of which was liquid tight. Unfortunately when the trunk seals and drains would fail, the compartment would fill with liquid and components would fail. None of which was covered under any warranty. Just some food for thought.

and a lone can rolled under the passenger seat into the control unit that runs the radio controls and Bluetooth module. The can broke on the corner of it and sprayed all over the unit.
Worth mentioning again just how much electronics are under the seats in our vehicles. Everything from batteries (which are apparently improperly clamped down, according to that latest Gen 2 recall) to electronics control units, amps, inverters, etc.

I'm sure people smarter than me can list what is where, but my point is that I try to never make a mess inside my vehicle. I recently dropped a french fry between the seats and had a panicked moment that it will destroy something. As a bit of an "OCD freak", I tend to point my leaf blower under the seat and blow out any dust or crumbs; but am sure that could potentially cause problems of its own, LOL. 😆

Yes... But, if you've never seen a Yeti does that mean they don't exist and the probability is zero?

I too suffer from the interior OCDitus. But also have a 2 year old daughter, that likes crackers. The two don't go hand in hand. I've definitely pulled out the Milwaukee battery blower to the interior prior to detailing it. even though the back seat only stays clean for a short time, that time is pure heaven.

The 1500w inverter lives under the Gen 1 passenger seat. I can't remember what's under the drivers, but I'm sure it's equally important.
