Bidirectional Charging?

Does anyone have any information on if rivians will be able to support bidirectional charging like the lightning? Being in CA I am stuck with a "time of use" plan from the electric company and I pay almost double per KW/hr from 4-9PM vs any other time of the day. It would be a huge cost savings if I could plug in my car and power my house with the car battery during the high rate hours and then switch back to changing the car when electric rates drop.

Have you considered what effect doing that on a daily basis might have on the battery pack longevity? I'd be concerned that trying to save $1 a day on your electric bill may end up costing thousands in battery replacement costs.

Not disagreeing with your point but in SoCal with SCE lot more than a dollar a day. 4pm to 9pm in the summer is 47 cents a kw, in the winter 41 cents. If you go with the prime rate plan you can get if you have an electric car it is .48 and .45.

If the changes for solar net metering go in I’ll get a battery back for the house rather than use the vehicle on a daily basis. I would still like the ability to use an EV in an emergency for extended outages.

The only information I think most people have is what was stated in the Round Table Q&A starting at 13:42 mark.


That is to say, Vehicle-to-Vehicle and Vehicle-to-House (Bi-Directional Charging) is in development, won't be available for launch, but all Rivian vehicles should be compatible with it since these are all external devices.

Exactly what I was thinking ZANZC02. I got solar a few years back so I am stuck with the time of use plan from the power company. 22c per kw/h for low times and 41 to 47c per kw/h from 4-9PM. My current solar setup covers about 80% of my house power needs so adding the rivian charging will basically be off the grid. Assuming I use 12kw/h a day from 4-9 that equate to about $3 a day or $1095 a year. It is a big difference. Spending 10K on a dedicated batter pack will yield about 13kw of storage compared to upgrading to the max pac which will add 45kw for the same price. Yes the battery will wear out quicker but realistically over the 6-10 years I own the car I won't come close to killing the battery

Sorry for off topic, but damn cost of living in California is outrageous! Upstate NY my utility bills total about $175/ month including gas, electric, water, sewer and trash removal.

Too many unknowns to compare and say it's crazy talk. Type of heating and cooling, hot water method, lighting, home size, home vs. condo, number of people, etc. etc. etc.

Two quick things.

1) Once you own an EV, doesn't SCE offer EV rate? I'm in SDG&E coverage area (South OC) and have solar and EV. My service is a net metering with EV-TOU rate. Its 9 cents/kW/h midnight to 6AM during the week and till 2pm on wkend and holidays. The peak is higher than yours from 4-9 at 56 cents.

2) We have scheduled just about everything overnight for dishwasher, washing machine and all the home lighting (inside/outside) are LEDs. We find that our net metering settlement once a year to be less than $100/yr.

Recommend checking into if there is an EV TOU rate from SCE,

NYSEG $140+ $12 town water + $6 City Sewer +$14 trash = $172. water is a liitle less in winter not watering the lawn NYSEG is a liitle more for gas. $175 is probably more accurate. I live in a 1500SF cape cod style shanty with unfinished basement and a detached unheated garage. You can pick them up for $150K all day long if anyone is interested in relocating.

They do offer a prime rate if you have an EV it has higher 4-9 rates and lower other hours but if you have solar you are better off not using it. They credit the net usage based on price generated verses price used so if you use the EV rates it is close to 3 to 1 for power used during 4 to 9.

I sized my solar based on current usage and what the Rivian will use. It took SCE 4 months to get me a bill but charging a Tesla Model S and normal house usage I am generating more than I use even in the shorter winter months.

For all those utilities we are also under 200 a month even in the worst months.

We have free super charging for the Tesla but with the high electric rates it made more sense to add solar to prepare for the Rivian. With the federal tax credit and high electric rates it calculates out to just over 5 years to pay for itself. Might be a few months longer with the Rivian delivery delay but started charging the Tesla at home more now So still benefit from the solar install.

Sounds like a good set up. We rarely loose power wear I live in town and rates are low so V2H would be a novelty more than anything. Our irradiance is low so the most economical green upgrade we can make is to properly insulate and seal our homes. Geothermal works well if you have the site for it but pricey up front and still need supplemental heat source in winter. We have 2 seasons summer that lasts 3 months and Winter that lasts the balance... maybe why homes are so cheap!

Living in western Washington, we are paying about 10c/kwh flat all day and night so not much savings there. But power outages are getting more frequent as storms are getting stronger. It would be a great help to have a backup option for those unfortunate times. I don't want to put a noisy generator that some of neighbors started to add.
