I've charged 3 times since this issue started and have not had to do a soft or hard reset to get it to work.

If you get the unplug error, after preconditioning the battery, a sleep cycle will then let it charge. If you don't try to charge first, you don't need to even let it sleep.

Today I was out running errands and knew I would need to charge, so I just started preconditioning on the way back, warmed up to 50 per the display on the way home. Parked, turned off preconditioning, then plugged in and it worked like normal.

I really do hope they get this issue fixed this week. My wife always pokes fun at my early adopter tendencies and is having a field day at the moment...
I just built a heated garage.

Just got off the phone with Rivian Support. For level 2 charging you have to warm the battery temperature above 40 degrees F, then do a hard reset of the entire car (hold leftmost steering wheel button and flashers button until it resets). After the reboot it should be able to charge.
It's been between-3 and 12 degrees here over the weekend so charging would only work after I'd driven around a bunch and the battery got warmed up.
Don't know if this is a new bug or not since I got the R1T after Elon went crazy this spring and it wasn't that cold then.
So is this reset technique supposed to be a permanent fix, or do you have to perform it every time the battery drops below 40 deg F?

I never had this problem last winter. I think it’s a new bug. I have had to do this the last week when temps were negative.

I just had this issue with my Gen2 R1T this week. After letting it sit at the airport for 4 days with lows in the single digits and highs in the teens, when I got in to drive home I got a warning that range was reduced due to cold battery.

Even after a 80 mile drive home, the battery was not warmed up. The truck would not initiate a L2 charge, just gave me a unplug and retry error. After preconditioning, it would charge. I confirmed the issue with Rivian support.

So, in extreme cold, you may have too.
Highs in the teens is a shorts and t-shirt kind of day, not extreme cold. It’s not even winter until it gets below 0°. In all seriousness though, that sucks. My Gen 1 never had these issues, it would just charge slowly when cold soaked until the battery warmed up a bit and then was good to go. The grab bag of improvements and downgrades for the Gen 2s has been interesting.

I find this insane. If there is a delay to charge that is fine but get busy with the heat already.

I am not affected but could be if travelling. Thanks for the heads up.

My name is Mike, and I have a (car) problem
Welp - mind did this, no error, warm garage. Likely to be a different issue, but it's infuriating.

Our Gen 2 R1S threw the 12V battery warning this morning and then failed to charge right after. Did the hard reboot and now it is charging, but the 12V warning is still present. Scheduled an appointment (also have other issues to fix), but frustrating for sure. Already had my wife's confidence hit with the whole 20% and your car may suddenly die thing the other week (right after driving close to 20% on the way home from the airport) and had several smaller software glitches and creaks/issues over the past three months.

My R1T has been pretty solid in comparison, but not confidence building for a 9 month old R1S to have another visit to the service center already. My R1T lease is expiring next winter and I'm starting to reconsider my plans and look elsewhere. The software quality has just been horrible since late summer.

Only performed the reset once. After that if I did the "Precondition for Fast DC Charging " and got it over 40 degrees it will AC charge just fine. One strange thing though is the round button in the charge port that normally turns green right away after plugging in, first turns red, then white, then finally turns green. This is different from the behavior observed before when it would just turn green after being plugged in.

Tech Support did say this problem only occurs for AC charging. They said if you go to a DC Fast charger it will begin charging immediately (or warming up to charge).

Only Gen 2's as far as I know.
I'm curious if the folks having issues got the .38 hot fix a couple weeks back? Also, battery size or chemistry aren't factors correct?

Gen 2, Large, & I was having initiation errors that went away after the hot fix. Northeast temps in the teens, battery has been in the 30's (sits outside) and it's been charging L2 at home ok the last few weeks.

yep, but there was the original .38 (which I had) and then some of us got a hot fix/2nd SW push that was also labeled as .38. I haven't checked RivianTrackr if the distinction is there.
2025.38.30, That's what I have and I have the cold charging issue.
