Truck has been having ANOTHER issue lately. I thought it was water in the rear calipers freezing, but it's been above freezing for 2 days now and it's still doing it. It sounds like the rear pads are rusting to the rotors. Something is "clunking" VERY loudly the very first time I move the truck after it has sat for ~4hrs or longer.

oldest took a video this morning. The noise happens at 0:04 in the video. The other "crunchy" sounds are the tires rolling over the ice outside the garage. Also, ignore the very "country" sounding 14yr old in the beginning :D

Once the truck moves for the first time, it's nice and smooth. Some slight grinding from the brakes on the first stop, but that's only after it's been wet (I ran it through the car wash last night), and that's understandable and tracks with previous vehicles.

This loud "clunk" though is really bad. Anyone have any thoughts?

I have a similar sound, although I don't believe its quite so loud - that being said, I've never listened to it from the outside. Maybe I'll roll down the window next time.

Mine has done it and still does. One day it was really loud so I made an appointment at the service center. Everything checked out fine.

There are other threads about this issue.

It’s moisture. It’s pretty common.
My C40 did it, my Rivian does it and my MachE used to do it. Same behavior.

I've had other vehicles do it, but it's a click, or slight clink. This is a very loud clunk, and jerks the truck significantly.

Pads rusting and sticking to the rotors. Not an issue. My T does it and so does my ICE car.

It'd be worth greasing the caliper pins since you're in the snow belt. This will probably not eliminate the clunk as it is almost surely just the pads sticking to the rotors which is normal on all vehicles, but it may reduce the severity and extend the parking interval where it shows up.

The difference is Rivian doesn't have a parking pawl, it uses the rear brakes to hold it in park whereas most other cars have a parking pawl or use a separate drum like e-brake so more chances of the main pads sticking to the rotor when brakes are hot.

I've had it before, but never as severe as this. It's almost as if the pads are welding themselves to the rotors. It's absurdly aggressive.

Do they make ceramic pads for these things?

I have the same annoyance. It usually happens to me after driving in moisture and sitting for long period as you mentioned. Mine often sounds much worse than yours...almost like a low caliber gunshot. Sometimes I get a nice double-tap when they release at slightly different times.

Service has checked this twice over the years, with the last time getting a recommendation to change the rear pads due to uneven wear. Not sure if this uneven wear due to improper greased pins from factory and the fun popping are related, but I have my suspicions.

My methods for reducing the chances of this disturbing issue:
1. If its wet out, do a hard brake just prior to getting to the house to help dry the pads.
2. On leaving, go in the same direction as you pulled in. (i.e. i nose in, so I'll go forward a few inches and then revers out). I read this in another thread and feel like it reduces the severity of popping. May be placebo, but it makes me feel better, so...

I have the same issue. It's weather related. Happens when it's cold and wet out. During the summer no clunking

This happens to me as well and is very common. It occurs more when driving in wet or humid conditions simply because the vehicle uses primarily (sometimes exclusively) regen to stop, therefore the brakes aren’t generating heat to dry off the pads. They then rust lightly to the rotor when the “hold” parking brake is applied, requiring a bit of force to pop them loose when moving the vehicle again.

If it really bothers you, you can use the brakes instead of regen for the last mile or two before you park, but then you’re losing all the benefits of regen, not to mention increasing wear on the pads unnecessarily.

It still sometimes startles me when it occurs, but it’s nothing to worry about.

Hope that provides some reassurance.

Glad I'm not the only one.

Since I back into the garage, I don't have a choice but to pull out, so the same direction thing won't work for me.

Mine is loud enough it's woken my wife up several times now. It's nearly as loud as a gun going off, and our bedroom is directly above the garage, so the sound just shoots up there.

Might try chocking the wheels and leaving the truck in neutral overnight see if that helps. I've ahd this before, but NEVER this aggressive.

Same on my truck, it's the pads stuck to the rotor when they are wet and you park, our tesla MX does it too, only sometimes it has a hard time backing up and popping them off the rotor...way worse than the my R1T, which usually pops them loose much easier
