R2 vs. R1? Why are you so excited about the R2 to reserve one?

Why are you so excited about the R2 to reserve one? I am new to Rivian, never owned, and was considering the R1S. It's bigger than I need and wondering if I should eb considering the R2. Is the R2 smaller and just as competent? Any info that you can share is appreciated. my BMW lease is up in Apri, so starting to consider options now.

There's a lot of info about the R2 - including on the Rivian website. It's scheduled to be released in 2026, but there's no way you'll get your hands on one before May so you may want to consider leasing a R1S in the interim.

Some banks will allow you to "extend" your lease a few months. I've done this a few times through Chase. They just let you continue on for 3-4 months at the same payment (something I'm seriously considering doing when my Gen1 lease is up, given it's sooooo cheap).

For my personal case:

R2 Benefits Vs R1

1. Better size for 95% of my needs / easier to deal with in city
2. Better energy efficiency (R1 is pig at lifetime 2.4 mi / kwh for me)
3. Faster charging on road trips
4. Same range (350)
5. Real autonomous capability (gen 3 only)
6. Next Gen in-cabin tech / AI integration (gen 3 only)
7. Retains water fording capabilities
8. Lower cost to buy/own/operate

Obviously not all of these things are known and if the prove to not be true then I am looking to back-up options for 2027 instead. (For #7, I live in a place very prone to flooding so that is a valued feature.)

I wanted my next vehicle to be something smaller and an EV. It needed to be able to tow a decent amount and have good ground clearance. It also needed to be affordable. The R2 fits what I am looking for. I still do not know all the specs on it yet but I suspect it will work perfectly for me. It all comes down to specs and price and how reliable it is before I pull the trigger and buy one.

I can think of 30,000 reasons. As well as it being more cost friendly, I don't need a 3 row SUV the size of the R1S. The R2 is perfect for me stats-wise.

Agree, own a R1T Gen1 will keep it as long as I can. Need something tidier with all the latest tech. Will be big enough for long hauls I am just hoping I can option it up a bit and it is not too bare bones of an EV.

Yeah, that’s exactly my perspective as well.

Primarily size and cost and need to replace wife's Model Y (which will go to my teen driver).

Size and form factor: Wife wants an SUV, but small and nimble around town and parking lots/garages. R1S is too big for our small garage.

Cost: Already have an R1T quad (which sits outside our garage) and is used for hauling stuff around ... R2 should hopefully be good value for the money.

Neither of us care about Autonomy+ at this time (purchased FSD in 2018 in previous Tesla, upgraded to HW3 and sold 2023 ... 5 years was enough entertainment).

Given your lease is up in April, there is a very good chance you can't / won't get your hands on an R2 by then. I got really lucky with early VINs for both Tesla Model 3 and R1T, but we are in a similar situation as you with my kid turning 16 this year ... For us it's not a hard deadline so we will probably just be a 2 car family and wait it out, but I have also been keeping an eye on used EVs to hold us over if there are delays (not starting a rumor!) or I don't get lucky again with an early production.... Would like to get them into their own car by fall (so hoping I am lucky again!).

Given your timeline, the new Gen3 hardware is already a non-issue (almost certainly won't be out by the end of your lease), so if size/cost is not an issue for you, I would start looking more closely at an R1 if you are inclined to move to Rivian. We love our R1T.

I've never leased (Texas isn't a lease friendly state), maybe someone can chime in regarding R1 trade-in experience (assuming you could trade in your R1 for an R2 when you have the chance)... If that's a good experience then it seems like a no brainer and you never know, you may fall in love with the R1 and decide to stay in it.

The R2 will not be available in April, so consider that. You probably wont see mass deliveries until Q3 at best . While bigger, you could get a used R1S for likely the same price as a comparable R2, I would go that route.
