Will R2 have the same heat pump as R1 Gen 2?

Haha, I haven't seen any info on this yet....but I'd assume similar but different to accommodate the R2's unique packaging requirements. Also, one would hope they have learned from R1 heat pump as it's their first shot at it and it has improved with R2.

The alternative is the much less efficient resistive (with possibly motor generated augmented) heating. I have resistive heating in my Jeep, it works well, but it's certainly not battery friendly. The heat pump in our Model 3 works great, coldest we've used it in was about 2 deg F, it had no problem heating the cabin. All things considered, I'd rather have the heat pump.

I had my Gen 1 R1T early ass VIN LE in for some service and was given a brand new Gen 2 TriMax loaner (thank you very much Rivian!). I even pealed the plastic off the screen. Anyhow, the heat pump on it was so insanely loud I couldn't believe it. My gen 1 is whisper quiet in comparison. Maybe this one was a buy back, but if all of them sound that way, I'm not upgrading for some time. That was the first Gen 2 I have driven, just fyi... The dynamic glass was pretty cool though.

I’ve noticed no discernible improvement in cold weather perf in on drives in cold weather - and several downside‘s to the heat pump *as implemented in gen2*:

  • Dampers that are not tailored to work across the operating RPMs of the compressor, and awful exterior sound dampening.
  • Clear difficulties with battery heating: both winters the gen2 has been on the roads customers have had widespread issues with l2 charging in cold temps.
  • The lack of any PTC for cabin heating makes cabin warmup slower than gen1 (easily mitigated with remotely starting the climate system however). it also really struggles below 5-10f.
Overall though a technically superior architecture, it’s a bit of a miss in gen2. I don’t know/think theres anything wrong with the compressor itself - just how it’s integrated.

I expect Rivian to have taken this consistent feedback from many, many, gen2 owners and that at launch people will be commenting on how quite R2’s heat pump based climate control is.

It will have a heat pump, but hopefully improved. I hope they add a small electrical element to supplement the heat when temps get below 0 degrees F. They started testing early in Alaska so they should have plenty of time to make it work well in cold temps. If they want to sell this vehicle over seas, Especially the Nordic countries the heating system will need to work well.

Gen 1 doesn't have a heat pump. AC only. Heat pumps have to work pretty hard when there is a significant temperature delta.

Seems to me like these automotive heat pumps, similar to those for home heating, are effective and efficient down to maybe 40degF and beyond that are overworked, loud, and maybe not completely effective on their own in single digit or lower temps. If your State borders Canada, you probably don't want a sole electric heat pump for all your heating in your home because the electricity cost would be double your gas bill. And you probably want a Gen 1 R1.

There are home heat pumps that are effective even below 0 degrees F - Cooper and Hunter sell such units.

I'm not an expert, but I'm still assuming the monthly electricity cost is significantly higher relative to gas in those temp ranges.

More on topic, my AC (technically also a heat pump?) in my Gen 1 was super loud in the Summer until there was a service notice where Rivian found a way to clamp down on the vibrations.

That assumes you have natural gas. Quite a few areas have very expensive heating oil so a cold weather heat pump saves a lot of money.

I have no issues with the heat pump on our G2 R1S. Jan ‘25 build. Was a little loud when delivered but updates have fixed all that.

Yeah, I also haven't had any issues or complaints with the heat pump in my R1S.

OP's post seems to imply like we are all in on the joke or that it's universally known to be bad.

What's wrong with the heat pumps in R1 vehicles?

OK, I want to be clear about my future choices. I don’t have a problem with a heat pump. I had one in my model 3. However, it needs to be whisper quit like my model 3.

My 25 TriMax sounds like I’m part of the landscaping crew when pull up to work. It’s embarrassing. People ask if everything is okay. Rivian says it’s all groovy.

Rivian R1S and Telsa Model Y
I have both an R1S Gen2 and a 2022 Model Y. The heat pump is fantastic in the model Y…quiet and heats up the cabin fast even in really cold weather. The R1s is very loud but you don’t notice it in the cabin and it definitely is a lot slower to heat compared to the Model Y. Not necessarily a deal breaker but do wish it was better.

Tesla has proven heat pumps can work great, so no excuse why Rivian can’t figure it out.
