I just googled the benefits of the 46/95 cells in the R2. I definitely seems like it will have better Thermal management possibilities so I would expect it to charge faster.

Pros of the 4695 Battery Cell
  • Higher Capacity & Energy: The increased dimensions allow for more active material, resulting in higher energy density and longer range for EVs.
  • Improved Efficiency: As a cylindrical cell, it provides better thermal management via air gaps between cells and allows for faster charge/discharge rates compared to other formats.
  • Enhanced Safety: 4695 cells often feature thick, flame-retardant, and robust, durable containers designed for high-demand, industrial, or electric vehicle applications.
  • Longer Lifecycle: The design focuses on superior longevity and improved performance over time.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
Pretty sure they’re going to be very close to Model Y in price and range. That’s been the plan all along. The Tri Motor will be more expensive, but the bread and butter long Range Dual Motor will be competitive with Model Y, has to be.
The Model Y that costs as much as the Standard $45K RWD R2, is the Premium RWD MY, but its EPA estimated range is 87 miles longer (270 vs. 357). Even the Standard AWD MY, which is $42K, has almost 300 miles of range (294 miles).

I know Tesla’s estimates are often off. How about Rivian’s? I want real-world range.

We don't know the facts about R2, we will know more in a couple days. But yes, an egg shaped car with the same battery pack size will have significantly more range than an actual SUV. If you care about range, buy the egg.

I was replying to someone’s comment about the R2 being similar in price and range to the Model Y, which I personally don’t think will be possible based on scale and as you mentioned aerodynamics. I know this already.

I was also saying that Tesla’s range estimates are often off. Just wondering how off Rivian’s usually are based on the R1 line, which is the only data available. I remember seeing a test like this on YouTube comparing the real world range and efficiency of various models.

Of course the R2 will have new structural LG 4695 NMC batteries with more density, so that should change things up a little. Only time will tell.

I am hoping for 10-80% in 25 mins but believe that it will be in the low 30s. We shall find out soon enough
Curious do a lot of people charge 10-80%?

On my longer trips with my R1S most of my charges fall somewhere in the 20-65% range and a lot of times the charges are under 15 minutes.

I will say most of my charge stops are 100-120 miles apart as I prefer to stop for bio breaks and stretch my legs. The benefit of this is it keeps my charges in the higher kWh ranges.

Whoops. I must have heard it wrong. Thx!!
No worries. I just watched it again and RJ says 5” shorter wheelbase. That still makes it 5” shorter overall, right? It looks shorter in height, too.

I’ve read that a lot of people who have seen these two vehicles in person say the R2 is smaller than they imagined (mini R1S) and the R3 is bigger (chunky hatch).

No, it also has shorter front and rear overhangs. It’s significantly shorter than the R1 and R2. The image I posted above has the vehicles overlayed with their front wheels aligned. If you push the R3 up so that its front bumper aligns with the others, you see how much shorter it is.

That battery capacity finding on A Better Route Planning might be a big nothingburger because there are battery capacities for R3 listed as well. All R2 and R3 capacities are listed is "estimate".

Wait for the actual specs......
Yep, ABRP has had Aptera on there for years, and I'm not even sure the Aptera people know what the specs will be (assuming they make any deliveries).

I understand it's their "schtick" but I think the weak sauce thing is missing the forest for the trees. For early adopters and enthusiasts stuff like peak charge and how long it can hold probably matter some. That's the R1 crowd. For the R2 audience I think it's mostly irrelevant. Ask an average Model Y or 3 driver what their peak charge rate is and how long it can hold it and see what they say.
Agreed. I’ve been driving Teslas since 2013 and very few Tesla owners know what the peak charge rate of their car is or what the peak charge rate of the various Supercharger versions are. All they know is what their car displays as the available range and about how long it takes to charge their car when the battery is fairly low.

Yes but I think range will definitely matter to R2 buyers.

If they really release it at $45k and 300 miles of range, it might be sufficient. If the price creaps up into ix3 territory, 300 miles of range is going to be a problem and hurt sales.

And range matters significantly to people switching from ICEVs to BEVs.
I don't disagree with this, but better battery chemistry can't here soon enough. My Lexus TX (non hybrid) gets right at 300 miles on a tank. We always travel in it because of the ease & convenience of fill up. IMO, that is the difference. Sometimes you have to drive 5 miles (round trip) off your route through stop lights to find a charging station with no restroom let alone place to get a to go order.

Also, I think the form factor favors the R2 over competitors. Volvo, BMW, etc narrow at the top reducing interior space. I've owned three XC 90s and three X5s. I always felt cramped. RS & TX don't do that and feel much roomier.
