I think this is the case for R2 and beyond (R1 Gen 3, R3, etc.) but not R1 Gen 2 or Gen 1 - they share the same infotainment processing stack (or really similar) and so will rely on off-vehicle compute. That being said, I don't remember hearing anything about it requiring Connect+ to function.

Good point! I'm headed to someplace I'm expecting to not have cell service later this afternoon, I'll try it and report back.

It seems to, but I was responding to the part about off-vehicle compute - can't do that without service! I'm not sure about Connect+ vs not...

The entertainment chip in the R2 will not change when the RAP1 and LiDAR comes - so not a new generation overall. Only impact is autonomy - hence why people who are not so bothered by that can by the R2 now with certainty.

From everything I have read the infotainment chip stays the same between 2026 and 2027 R2 since it is off the shelf and already available. Would be good to have final confirmation of this but it was confirmed for Rivian Assistant that the R2 has more onboard compute compared to Gen 2 R1.

The mobile app update is “usually” followed by a vehicle update a couple of weeks later. It’s not likely Rivian Assistant will be part of this vehicle update.

release notes for the app do not mention the assistant. App update is about delivery option of new vehicles.
